iPhone 2G 8GB Head Phone Jack Issues

User uploaded file iPhone 2G Headphone Jack Issue

I bought a used iPhone 2G 8GB. When headphones are plugged in, the device senses that no headphones are plugged in. When headphones aren't plugged in, the device thinks that they are plugged in.

I just now replaced the headphone flex cable inside the iphone and i'm still having the same problem.

I have also restored the iPhone since I had bought it so I don't think it is a software problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm so lost now; I have no clue what else to do.

What are the chances of buying a broken flex cable that had the same problem... :/

For whatever reason not all original iPhone 2g's are the same. There are two models of logic boards and they use a different headphone jack & button ribbon. The headphone jack cables look the same but have different part numbers and are not interchangeable. If you use the wrong part in the iPhone 2g it will cause the headphone jack to essentially be reversed. All other buttons work properly just not the headphone jack.

My guess is you bought the iPhone from somebody who repaired it, and in repairing it they used the wrong part. They could have change the headphone jack cable for some reason due to a faulty button or faulty ear jack and used the wrong part, or the logic board could have been changed and they used the wrong logic board for the headphone jack cable they had

Possible fixes is to find a local repair shop that can replace the headphone jack cable with the proper one or see if the seller will take it back since it is not working properly, assuming they advertised it as a properly working iPhone.

I've read about how there are two different head phone jack flex cables but I just figured that if it was the wrong one, the whole cable would simply not work. If that is the problem, that the wrong cable reverses the head phone jack, I think I can track down the right cable and replace it-- again.

Thanks for the answer, saved me from throwing the phone into the wall. 😀

Would you happen to know where to look on the cable to find out whether it is the right type or not?

It's printed clearly on the cable that has the connection for the logic board on it.

The two part numbers are 821-0449 or 821-0600. The two cables look the same too.

All other buttons work right on the unit but I guess the connection for the headphone jack is just reversed. Seems odd that Apple would make a cable that is so close to working properly, but is just off on one thing. I've actually fixed up a couple of iPhone 2g's to resell, and ran into the same issue, as I was using a cable from one phone in another one, and it worked perfectly except for the headphone jack and the speaker would only work with heaphones in there.

Thanks!

I've ordered the 821-600 cable; I currently have the 821-0449 in mine.

Ugh, 24$ for the 821-600 one :/ The only place I was able to find it was from one seller on eBay. Every other cable was the old series, sold from $1.99 or so.

I will follow up on the repair in a couple days or so.
