change duration transition final cut x

Right click or control+click on it and click change duration. Then, type in the length you want.

When you click on change duration, the box that tells you what place in the video you are at should turn blue. Then you can just type the duration you want and press return.

Just press enter(return)!

Perhaps the clip you're applying the transition to has insufficient media (aka 'handles') to accomodate the the extended duration?

I've found the timeline's logic in regards to transition duration pretty frustrating myself.

I had the same problems, try the following.

Go to Preferences (⌘,) and set the following option.

Select the transition press ⌃D, your timecode should change from

this to

Then just type in your new transition amount.

I found setting my Default length to 0.60 help, if not then try re-satring FCP X.

I think all these suggestion will work as long as the transition has sufficient media length (aka 'handles') to accommodate the extended duration.

You just need to delete the transition and trim a tiny bit off of each clip then reapply the transition and drag it out the transition handles to your desired length.

Regardless of all these tips, in some cases FCP will just not add a proper length transition. I found a way around it:

- add whatever clip at the point in the timeline wher you want the extended transition

- add the transition between this new clip and the one following it. This will normally add the transition with the defaut length. If you get a message saying there is not enough space,just ignore and add the transition anyway

- delete the clip you added in the previous step

You should be ok now.

Anyone know how I can shorten a "Custom" solid I am using to put a little bit of a gap between to video clips?

The little custom solid is just over twelve seconds duration and I hope to reduce to maybe four seconds with a cross-dissolve transition at either end of it.
