How to activate new iPhone?

I received an brand new unlocked iPhone 4 from my friend as a gift. it was completely sealed.

I bought a prepaid SIM card in Optus and inserted into the new phone.

and linked it to iTunes.

but iTunes said as below

"The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.

Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone.

Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit supported Carrier?Aos store

to receive a replacement SIM card."

I tried various methods a lot of times but still is not activating.

- turn off iphone

- link off from computer

- turn off itunes

- reboot computer

- take off SIM card and insert again

- link to computer

almost kinds of method in internet.,...

what should i do now?

iPhone 4, iOS 4.3.3

Call your friend and find out what carrier your phone is locked to. You will not be able to activate the phone without a sim card in it from the carrier the phone is locked to.

Hate to burst your bubble, but you can't go by those lists anymore. You're getting that error message in iTunes because your phone is carrier locked, whether you want to believe it or not. So, call your friend & verify where/how this phone was purchased so that we can offer a solution.

You said it was factory sealed when you got it? Take a look at the box. Do you see a carrier logo anywhere on the box? (It's on the bottom of mine). If you do, that's the carrier it's locked to.

As wjosten said, that list is not a reliable guide any more. Even so, the list indicates the phone is from New Zealand. Where are you and where did your friend, who gifted you the phone, get it?
