You have to Share (Export) the project first, then create the DVD using iDVD. The preferred method is to use Share>Media Browser (from iMovie's menu). Choose the highest size option available from the pop-up menu. Open iDVD, create a new iDVD project, then drag the shared movie from iDVD's Media Browser (Movies tab) to the background of the Theme of your choice.

In iMovie, you can also use Share>iDVD, but a number of users here (including me) find that Share>Media Browser produces a better quality DVD. The Share>iDVD option will open a new project for you and place the exported movie directly into a Theme.

I'll post this then come back with some additional information for you.

Re-reading your post, I notice that you are saving the iMovie project to a USB drive (either a flash drive or hard disk?). My response above relates to creating a DVD that will be playable on a DVD Player. From your question, I assume that you are able to connect a USB drive directly to the DVD Player (rather than playing a DVD).

If you are putting the movie on a USB drive you still need to Share the movie. As well as Share>Media Browser, you have other Share options, such as Share>Export Movie and Share>Export using QuickTime. Using Share>Export Movie, you can choose different size options and also choose where you wish to save the movie, for example, Desktop, Movies folder or other location on your hard drive or external drive. You could, for example, save it directly to your USB flash drive or external hard drive.

Rename the videos by changing the extension from .mov to .mp4. That works beautifully for my Samsung DVD player.

(To the previous poster, I believe tha OP was attempting to play the USB on her DVD player, not a DVD.)

Yes, thanks for that. My second post corrected that (posted before I saw your response). I didn't read the question properly. 😊

I use a WD TV Live HD Media Player. With earlier versions (before recent firmware updates), I had to rename the .m4v files to .mov - otherwise they wouldn't enable fast forwarding - but that all works OK now. My DVD Player doesn't have a USB port, so I have no experience with that method.

Read the manual for your DVD player to find out what types of files can be played through the USB connection. For instance, the Phillips DVP5992 will play JPEG, MP3, WMA, WMV, or DivX. MOV and MP4 are not among that list.

I have iMovie '09 which does not have an export setting for WMV or DivX (the two video formats from the list above). I have not had the need to convert to those formats before but MPEG Streamclip (free app) can convert to WMV. You can export as a Quicktime Movie then convert it to WMV using MPEG Streamclip
