I keep hearing this random sound while using my new MBP. Sounds like a guitar chord being strummed but it's very, very brief. I have skype, msn and safari switched on but I've disabled the notifications but the sound still happens at random intervals. Is there something wrong with my mbp? I've used it for less than a month..

If you use your Mail app and keep it open, it may be the sound of incoming messages. If you've eliminated all other possibilities and the sound continues, make an appointment with your local Apple Genius to have it checked out.

check the sound notifications on msn or skype! if it's a guitar, sounds more like its a Microsoft sound effect, check msn.
check your startup items in system prefs, see what's automatically starting up making that sound!!
then check your sound prefs in system prefs. You have something starting up using that sound.
ohyes. it's the alert sound. The funk sound. but i don't know what's causing it as it occurs at random intervals with no alerts popping up and sometimes with me not using the laptop at all! all the options are checked in the sound effects tab..
I've checked and both are off! it's like an alert sound, sounding something in the regions of low pitched 'funk' and 'punk'...
hmm. i only have itunes helper, skype, msn, appcleaner helper and magic prefs in my startup items! doubt any of them makes such a sound...
