My 2008 MacBook Pro won't start up. When I hit the power button, it gives the chime and then the screen lights up with a light gray screen with a dark gray apple, and the scrolling ball just winds and winds indefinitely and it never gets past this step. I've removed the battery, done restarts etc but cannot get it started. Help??? Many thanks!

Have you reciently updated the os on this macbook?
Have you tried reseting the SMC and the pram?
You can also boot to the install disc and run repair disk and repair permissions on the hard drive.
I'm having a similar problem on my mac after trying to boot snow leopard in 64 bit mode, Disk utility verified my disk and I repaired permissions. I don't know how to reset the smc and pram can you explain thx, Mark
I found a link for resetting the pram and smc. It turns out I reset the pram on the phone with apple technical support last night. It says the smc is kind of a last resort on the page I read. My computer boots fine in safe mode and from the install disk but can't start up any other way is the smc the likely cause, thx mark
