track lost ipad with serial number

Apple cannot track an iPad. If you set up the Find My iPad service before you lost the iPad, you may be able to track it via that service. Otherwise tracking will be impossible.

what i did was called the apple auto calling place and the guy enrique said he was going to make a note so next time the ipad loggs into itunes im guessing they will be notified and then they will notify me and so on .. i lost my ipad and its been three days .. 6/18/12 and hjavent found it yet .. fudge

I don't know what an "auto calling place" might be, but Apple cannot and will not do that. Whoever you talked to was wrong. Apple states publicly and clearly that they have no mechanism for flagging and tracking stolen items:

Sorry, but again, if you didn't set up Find My iPad, there is no way the iPad can be tracked. Only if the police happen to find it as part of another investigation or arrest or some honest person happens to find an turn it in is there much chance that you'll ever see your iPad again.

How does one LOSE an iPad?

Mine is BIG AND HEAVY and I consider it expensive, so I am VERY careful with it.

Lots of people lose laptops, which are much larger and heavier than an iPad. So it can be done. You set it down someplace, get distracted and walk away without it, and it's gone when you realize it and try to retrace your steps.

You may well not. But again, I've encountered a number of people who do. It's not that hard if you're in a hurry, such as in an airport running to catch a plane, to leave something behind.

So if I am understanding correctly, you lose your iPad and don't have one of those find me apps, you are pretty much SOL as Apple doesn't have tracking technology and matching technology in place on iTunes, right?

The Find My iPad service is the tracking technology in place provided by Apple. There is no practical way a device can be be located without such a service in place.

And just to correct a common misunderstanding, Find My iPad/iPhone/iPod doesn't take an app, just setting up the service on the device and then a computer with a web browser and an Internet connection. There is an app available of you want to try and track the device from another iOS device; the app goes on the device doing the tracking.
