Creating Key Binding

Hello all,

One of the keys on my Macbook's keyboard has quit functioning (the "x" key). I've determined it is indeed a hardware issue, so until I can justify replacing the keyboard, I'm without that key. I would like to bind a fairly simply set of key strokes to allow me to type x without having to access the keyboard viewer. Something like "^zz". However, I have not been successful, either by creating a DefaultKeyBindings.dict file in /Library/KeyBindings, nor by using the Keyboard Shortcuts pane in Sys Prefs.

So, how can I create an alternate key binding?

The approaches you tried will not work for this. Instead use system prefs/language & text/text/symbol and text substitution.

Or you could make a custom keyboard layout with

Thanks for the quick reply. I did download Ukelele, but figured I'd ask the question here first. I've also realized a made a boo boo; I have 10.5.8, not 6.8, so I don't have the text & symbol pane. Without that, am I left creating a custom map?
