How do I cancel 6000+ OLD messages from downloading into my I Phone?

The account must be a POP account.
If so, when creating an existing POP account with 6000 messages that remain at the incoming mail server with any email client, all messages that remain at the incoming mail server will be downloaded as new and unread messages.
If you want this to stop, double-press the home button to remove the Mail app from the fast app switching bar which will quit the app.
Follow this by removing the messages from server with the email client used on your computer for accessing the account or via webmail access for the account using a browser.
