My ipad is stuck updating apps.

My iPad is stuck during updating. Saw I had 10 apps that had updates available. Pushed "update all", that was three days ago. Still "waiting"..... How can I just stop or delete them? Please help!

What worked for me was:

  • to tap the stuck app currently loading to "pause" it
  • and then start it again to resume
  • It would continue for a bit and then get stuck again -
  • I'd have to repeat until it loaded.

Wow, is this ever buggy software from Apple!

Not what I expect from them and especially from their App Store?!

I agree... Apple needs to be aware of this issue. I have sent them feedback. Others should as well.

Never hit "Update All" unless you have less than 3-4 updates pending. I can typically do 4-5 updates at a time, and my ISP isn't really fast (1.5 - 6Mbps depending on the time of day).

I did this once, not to long ago, when I had about 35 apps pending update. Thank goodness I did this on my iPad, which isn't as essential as my iPhone. In general, I test everything on my iPad before I do it on my iPhone -- upgrade in particular.

You have to stay on top of updates and do them often... Either that, or just do a few at a time. There's so many updates, it's hard to do it all the time.

No, you can't cancel it. But you CAN make it work instead of waiting for three days and having it still not complete.

My iPad was trying to update 200 apps (I collect a lot of free stuff I never use, so sue me). Can't cancel. Can't even delete 'em if they are waiting to be updated.

So, looked at the screens. A bunch were "waiting" but another bunch (I am guessing about 20) were "installing".

This thing was thrashing. Timesharing itself to death. The install procedure takes long enough as it is, if 20 are trying to do it simultaneously it will take a long, long time.

So. Tap on all of the "Waiting" icons so they read "Paused". This will prevent them from starting up with "Loading" when one of the current "Installing" frees up an active slot. Go away for an hour or so to give those 20 active "Installing" apps a chance to work themselves out.

Now. When you get back, check to see how many are still "Installing". If all you find are "Paused" then you are ready to continue. Tap on one. It may go to "Waiting" briefly, or it may go straight to "Loading". After "Loading" it will go to "Installing". But, it will finish in the normal amount of time.

Activate the remaining "Paused" apps one at a time. Maybe two at a time, but no more than that. What I have been doing is as soon as one goes from "Loading" to "Installing" I tap another "Paused" to get it to start "Loading". Sometimes the second one goes to "Installing" before the first is finished. At that point I wait. With no more than two active at a time, and you can get it done in a reasonable period of time. The downside is that you do have to babysit the process.

THIS IS A FIX. (7-29-2013)

I just returned from the Tulsa Apple Store. Tech said he was told this was a system wide issue. Suggest I could go into my purchased apps on my ipad and look for any that said Update. I did, and I clicked each one. Now the AppStore icon no longer shows any red numbers meaning all apps are up to date.

The update page is still white when it should say all apps are up to date, but that's Apple's problem. My only complaint is that an Apple tech should have posted this notice days ago instead of me.

Your hero.

Can someone advise how I can reboot using a backup? I went through the step of resetting all setting, but then the ipad booted up again normally without giving me any options on how I want to reboot. I still can't download new apps and if I want to upload old apps it continues to show them as waiting. I have deleted everything that stalled and can't see what is holding up the system now. Really getting frustrated now and this is my last try before going into an apple store to ask for help.. Thanks so much!
