I chose the "erase all data" option bcoz my iphone cant recognized my sim card... after updating the IOS from 4.1 to 4.3.3.....previously the sim card was working without any problem.

Erasing all data should take only a couple of minutes on an iPhones 4 or 3GS (as opposed to the iPhone 3G) since it involves removing the decryption key rather than overwriting the data.
Getting back to your original problem where your SIM was not recognized after updating. This suggests that your phone was previously carrier unlocked by unauthorized methods and now is re-locked to the original carrier, as will happen when updating or restoring. Erasing all data won't fix that.

If it no longer accepts your SIM, as you said in your 1st post, it's no longer unlocked, which means that it had been unlocked by unauthorized methods (hacking). Where did you get it? Many unofficial stores and online sites sell hacked phones as "unlocked."
The fact that it's "stuck" in erasing all data is also a sign that your phone was hacked in the past. At this point, you need to put it in recovery mode and restore as new, but that may no longer be possible.

hi, I have reset my iphone 4 because i purchased this unit from a friend. However, the reset process takes very long...
after i have selected the <erase all content and settings>, there is a small rotating symbol, and it keeps rotating..
takes a long while and i still could not see the end of it.
I have approximately 13GB of data and apps in the iphone.
do i expect to wait for a long time ?

As previously stated, it should only take a few minutes. Try Recovery Mode.

tried restore. took about 75 mins but everything stays the same in the iphone after the restore process. i was expecting to see an empty phone with basic Apple Apps but I was wrong.
so the restore doesn't work.

Maybe. If you restored without your backup, you should have seen "an empty phone with basic Apple Apps"
Try restoring again without your backup. If still a problem, then the hack (cydia) is likely the cause.
