No, you do not need to use AirPort (or Wi-Fi) for internet connectivity on your Apple TV. If you do not have a wireless network available, you can use an Ethernet cable with your Apple TV in order to access the Internet.

To connect your Apple TV to the Internet using Ethernet, connect an Ethernet cable to the back of your router, and then connect the other end to the Ethernet port on the back of your Apple TV.

For more information on which connectivity options the Apple TV supports, please see http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs.html.
