foscam wireless ip camera

I have a Foscam FI8918 wireless ip camera. I have a new airport extreme base station. The camera was previously set up on a linksys router and I had dyndns host a static ip so I could access the camera from the internet. Since installing the new Airpprt extreme I have been unable to set this camera up. Please give me instructions on how to do this exclusively with my iMac. I have the ip camera tool on my iMac and can see the camera when plugged into the Airport extreme via ethernet cable. I am, however, unable to see the camera via wifi after following the instructions. I did spend around 5hrs setting this camera up with a pc running windows xp and the linksys router. The airport utility and airport extreme are just a bit different and I am just learning how to use them. Any hel would be greatly appreciated.

Note: I am assuming that your wireless camera is accessible via a web browser on the local network.

  1. Start the AirPort Utility > Select the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn).
  2. Select Manual Setup.
  3. Verify that Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address is selected on the Internet > Internet Connection tab.
  4. Select Advanced, and then, select the Port Mapping tab.
  5. Click the plus sign to add a new port mapping.
  6. For Service, leave the default; this will change to "Custom" once you start entering port values.
  7. In the Public UDP Port(s) and Public TCP Port(s) boxes, type in a 4-digit port number (e.g., 8888) that you choose. In the Private IP Address box, type the internal IP address of your camera. In the Private UDP Port(s) and Private TCP Port(s) boxes, enter the appropriate port values that should have been provided to you by the camera manufacturer. Click Continue.
  8. In the Description box, type a descriptive name like "Internet Camera Access," and then, click Done.
  9. Click on Update.

To connect to the shared Camera from a remote location using a Mac or PC:

  1. Start your favorite web browser.
  2. Enter the dyndns-provided Domain Name, followed by a colon and the Public port number that you choose in step 7 of the previous procedure. For example: http://www.mydyndnsdomainname.com:8888

Since you have an AEBSn, you can use the DHCP reservation feature in the AirPort Utility to assign a static IP address to the camera from the pool of available DHCP addresses.

  • AirPort Utility > Select the AEBSn > Manual Setup > Internet > DHCP tab > DHCP Reservations
  • Click on the plus button to add a reservation (Note: You will need to know the MAC address of the camera to reserve the address.)

Are you using the ip camera app that comes with the camera? Once you launch the app it should automatically find the cameras local address that will start with 10... I am still having difficulty getting my camera viewable from the Internet. I have a very small knowledge of how this stuff even works. I spent a whole day trying and finally just gave up to revisit another day. Good luck.

You should be able to input that address into Safari or IE to access your camera. That is assuming your computer is on the same Local network. Until you configure the device you won't be able to access it from the Internet outside your LAN. Are you plugging the camera directly to an Ethernet cable from your router? You must do this first in order to set the camera up for wireless networking. Getting the camera to work on your local network is outlined clearly in the instructions. The difficult part is getting a static ip address that you can access from outside your local network. Be prepared to get a hosing service like DYNS ect...

Hope this helps

If your camera is plugged to your router and your iMac is also connected to the same router you can use Safari to access the camera via the ip address given to you by ip scanner. . Make sure when you log in to use the correct button as there is a separate button for IE and Firefox/Safari. The Foscam is optimized for use with IE and active x so if you use firefox/safari you will not be able to send and receive audio...only video.

I also have an Airport Extreme and a few Foscam cameras. I set mine up like this:

1. Register with dyndns.

2. Using the Airport Utility, go to Internet...DHCP and create a reservation for the camera. (for some reason the router will give it a different IP almost every time it reboots, still haven't figured that out)

3. From the Airport Utility again go to Internet...NAT and then click on "Configure Port Mappings"

4. Configure "Personal Web Sharing" to go to the private IP of your camera.

I have this all set up and running at my house, but I use Blue Iris so I can view all my cameras from my phone from anywhere. It's an old thread so if I didn't answer your current question let me know.
