Hi Sarah,
Download/install the following and they should handle any type of video (do not install from one of those messages you're getting, as it may be a phishing scam):
Adobe Flash Player
VLC
Flip4Mac
Perian
This tip worked for me, Sarah:
With Safari open, go to Preferences (drop-down menu under the name Safari: upper-left corner of your screen).
Click the blue Extensions icon (second from the right between Privacy and Advanced).
If you have a plug-in from DivX, uncheck the "Enable" checkbox, or uninstall it.
Got this from a guy named "QuickTimeChris" in Apple Discussions, and it worked like a charm.
Good luck with your studies!
Darn! So easy! Many thanks - I have been struggling with this issue for weeks!
Am having the missing plug-in problem, but not with videos, with still documents, and not with MacBook Pro but with Lion on iMac. Unfortunately I don't have the DivX plug-in (as in RRRoll tip of 7/29). Apple Support senior reps have been unable to help, say it's an Adobe issue and I'll have to wait until Adobe develops a solution. Can't access parts of a website I need to do my job. Any other ideas, anybody?
Perian is the answer. What do you mean by, can't access parts of a website? Which parts?
Am a journalist, check cop reports online. I can log into the site and search for the reports, but can't call up individual reports. The designer of the site says all I need to see them is up-to-date Adobe Reader; I have it.
Downloaded Perian and installed it (I think—it does not show in the Safari/Preferences/Extension pane). Restarted. Still can't access the online police reports.
We just installed Lion and cannot view videos posted to our iWeb blogs. Insead we get the message about plugin failure. Unfortunately, we don't have any extensions to turn off, so we're not sure what to do.
Same problem here: missing plugin message when try to access certain videos or images. It's a new Macbook Pro with Lion installed and no Safari extensions.
missing plug-in error.
