Jul 15, 2011 10:31 AM in response to BDAquaby Allan Jones,The links that BDAqua provided only applied to the very first eMac (USB 1.1 logic boards) released in Jan 2002, and were fixed in units shipping by Aug 2002. It is not a known issue on USB 2.0 eMacs.
What is an issue with the USB 2.0 eMacs with 1.0 and 1.25ghz logic boards is serious--actually near-fatal-- and isdescribed in this Apple article:
http://www.apple.com/sg/support/emac/repairextensionprogram/
Unfortunately, the free program that fixed this (logic board replacement) expired over two years ago. If your eMacs fall within the serial number ranges provided, there's about a 90 percent chance that is your problem, and repairing them today is not cost-effective.
The only reasonable third-party repair service every offered for this problem replaced the bad components on your logic board for a flat fee of about US$130. The kicker is that shipping a 50-pound eMac round trip often cost as much as as the repair. If you are within driving disatance of Eugene Oregon USA, it might be worthwhile to do a drop-off. The company is:
The eMac service is not listed on their web page; you'll need to call them for information.
By the way, this did not affect the last of the line, the 1.42Ghz eMacs. They are still competent computers.
