Several people have suggested I run a diagnostic by booting in diagnostic mode. My macbook pro is too old to have this built in and booting to the Snow Leopard disk holding down the D key does not work.
Any suggestions?

The Apple Hardware Test is on the install disc. Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test
" Please be sure to disconnect any external devices, printers, hard drives, scanners, and so on (other than the Apple keyboard and mouse) from your Apple Computer before starting up to Apple Hardware test and running the Diagnostic."
