How to boot into diagnostic mode.

Several people have suggested I run a diagnostic by booting in diagnostic mode. My macbook pro is too old to have this built in and booting to the Snow Leopard disk holding down the D key does not work.
Any suggestions?

You have to boot from the original installer disc that came with the computer. If you no longer have then then:
