iPod Will Not Snyc

I recently updated my system software and now my iPod Touch (3 Gen) and iPad 1 will not show up on iTunes. They will charge and open iPhoto when connected, but they do not show up as a devise and will not sync.

Mac Mini with OS10.6.8

iTunes Ver. 3.1 (55)

I followed the troubleshooting instructions in

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1591

and uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled iTunes as it suggested and it worked until I restarted the computer. It seems unreasonable to have to reinstall iTunes every time you want to sync.

Any ideas?
