Ipod Touch 2nd Generation locks up in sleep mode

I just bought a pre owned ipod touch and it will come on and work properly until it goes into sleep mode and stays for 30 seconds. It will then fail to come back on. I then have to plug it in and hold the home button and the power button to get it to start up. Any help?
