Thunderbolt Pegasus R4 Experience?

Has anyone else got any first hand experience of the Promise Pegasus R4 (or R6) with their iMac? I bought mine this week and managed to load it up with around 1.4Tb (it holds around 3Tb) no problem. Now, today I can't get the drive to stay connected before it ejects for more than 5 minutes. It's driving me mad and I'm very concerned as I moved all my family video onto it from another drive and it won't stay connected long enough to get it back onto another drive again.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 2011 i7 3.4, 256Gb SSD and 16Gb RAM

This whole thread has genuinely put me off Thunderbolt. Call me crazy, but there don't seem to be too many different NAS RAID solution vendors out there. Yes, it may just be the Pegasus unit, but the posts about shielding the cable doing the trick are worrying.

As it stands, this (TB) is simply not production technology.

Until that gets addressed and taken seriously by both Apple and its TB device partners...I won't be investing in an R6. In the meantime, it's hurting confidence and uptake of TB tech.

Drobo gets my money.

Shame. It has so much promise. (Pun intended)

Cheers,

Wim

And don't forget to do the important 'Firmware UPDATE', after the normal update you do a second update check and the system shows the Firmware Update.

Download the firmware update, install it true the Promise Utility, confirm it. Than do a shutdown of your Pegasus Unit wait 1 min and restart the unit. Now the Firmware is installed into the Unit.

Our units works PERFECT! We don't have any problems any more! This systems rocks! We have 2 units from 12 TB with 6 drives. Both connected to our iMac 27" computer true Thunderbolt. PERFECT EN SOLID NOW!!!

I performed the utility and firmware updates yesterday to a fully working R6. So far, no problems. (I'm booting from my R6 and using it as my sole storage.)

Once you've updated the utility, just do a "Check for Updates" again from the Promise Utility menu and it should detect the firmware update and let you apply it.

Prior to the utility update I was seeing an over-temperature warning on the backplane sensor. That's no longer there, but I think it's because they simply changed the warning range. Before, I think it triggered at 46° C. Now it triggers at 50° C. The current temperature on my unit is 47° C. I didn't notice if there were other changes.

Just completed the Promise utility and the R4 firmware upgrade!

This is fantastic!.. full marks to promise on this one!

For those of us who boot from the promise, you now don't even need to touch the R4/6 power switch. Just switch on the Mac and the R4/6 detects the mac and starts up from cold. Same deal in reverse for a power down!

I've just set my disk drive to sleep in power options.. I wonder if it allows the R4/6 to sleep and how it wakes up?

levindenboer1975, I was read this thread in it's entirety and noticed it kind of stalled around March 6th. I continued to watch the thread to see if there was a solution for the problems/issues people had been posting. My interest lyed in the fact I had just sold my 1 year old iMac and purchased a new 27" iMac with ThunderBolt with the intent to buy a Promise Pegasus R6, so this thread was disappointing to say the least. But today to read your post was encouraging enough that I am ready to purchase. Your last post was March 20th and today (for me) is March 27th, and I would like to know are things still ROCK SOLID?

We got our RMA replacement unit last week and configured it (RAID5 + hot spare), with the latest firmware & current Promise Utility. It's been solid since then, no issues whatsoever. And fast, fast FAST. It's what we were hoping for when we ordered it.

The initial Pegasus R6 was a dud, but I have to commend Promise for doing everything they could to rectify the situation and make things right for us.
