Thunderbolt Pegasus R4 Experience?

Has anyone else got any first hand experience of the Promise Pegasus R4 (or R6) with their iMac? I bought mine this week and managed to load it up with around 1.4Tb (it holds around 3Tb) no problem. Now, today I can't get the drive to stay connected before it ejects for more than 5 minutes. It's driving me mad and I'm very concerned as I moved all my family video onto it from another drive and it won't stay connected long enough to get it back onto another drive again.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 2011 i7 3.4, 256Gb SSD and 16Gb RAM

Have you had ANY ejects? Mine has just ejected AGAIN (about the 30th time now and this is my 2nd R4). I notice you use an iMac and it appears to be the iMac that I'm having the issues with. It never ejected when it was plugged into a MacBook Pro.

I would STRONGLY recommend that anyone with an iMac does not buy one these drives until a firmware fix has been released because I'm not the only one with the problem and it's happened with 2 drives now.

I don't have any problems at all with the connections.

Are all the lights off blinking on your R4? Background task from the Promise http://127.0.0.1:8080 in your safari browser and you will see what it is doing.

But if your Laptop doesn't show this problem and you have a second R4 all ready, than i think it's the thunderbolt port on your iMac that causes this problem.

Dit you tried to connect to the second thunderbolt port on your iMac?

Can anyone with a Pegasus R4/R6 please try keep iTunes running in background and maybe sync the odd iPod/iPad/iPhone now and again and see if it stays connected? This is for iMac only as I believe from my experience plugged into my MacBook Pro it's fine on everything else. EVERYTIME it's ejected (and it's a LOT of ejects) it has been running iTunes. In particular, ripping a CD or Syncing my iPhone.

Just hope this is a firmware fix and not back to Apple for repair.

I just did the things you sayd, and our R6 is still running and has no connection failure at all. Wich iphone software are you running? And are you also using iTunes 10.4 (80) 64-Bits. And iphone version 4.3.5.

I've been doing lots of testing and it was definetely when I hit the iTunes sync BUT it looks like it could be either a fault iPod cable or even my hub. I've changed my iPod cable and so far I can't get it to eject. It's crazy that something that simple could have caused so much trouble.

Hello here we are again!! And we get today for the first time in weeks the same problem again! It worries me. Beceause we are working on the RAID5 drive's from the R6 and just suddenly it unmount it from the desktop!

This isn't normal i say! The thing must be running all times without any strange umounting moves!!! ****...

Mine has been running for weeks now without problem and I power mine off when I shut down the iMac. My problem is without question a dodgy USB Hub and iPod cable because mine only ever ejected when I plugged anything into the cable.

And yet.... YES Again!!! Today again it unmount itself from our desktop!! While we are working with Aperture on the images!!!! I hope the images are not dammaged!

This is realy unbelievable!! **** i just lost my faith in this system.....

I feel your pain on this but I promise mine has been flawless since finding the link with the hub or ipod cable. It may be yours is a different clash of some kind but it's worth trying to remember what may have been either connected or running at the time of the eject and working back from there.

I'm not entirely convinced mine won't eject again as my firewire raid neever ejected under the same circumstances but I'd make sure you keep in contact with Pegasus throughout the process.

The thing is, there is no other connection to our iMac than only the iPhone cable and our Spyder3 Elite. So we have to watch the iPhone cable when it unmounts again. In the line of the iPhone is connected or not?

I have been reading this with much interest.

In troubleshooting the problems, has anyone tried a different Thunderbolt cable?

I realize it's expensive to troubleshoot with the price of these cables.

You could maybe bring your drive to the Applestore? Might be easier than bringing your whole computer.

I do not have a Pegasus, I was thinking of getting one so I am reading and researching on the subject

When I was having my problems I did indeed buy a 2nd cable but it didn't fix my problem. I've replaced my USB Hub and iPod cable and been running for about a month now without any issues. I think it may be a conflict somewhere but hopefully mine was as simple as a suspect iPod cable. I need to try some more Aperture and Final Cut to really put it to the test but 90% of my ejects we're when iTunes was running.

All I know is mine eject 9 times out of 10 when the iPad, iPod or iPhone tried to sync. I changed the cables and I couldn't get it to eject anymore. I'm not suggesting that it's universally an iPod cable but you need to identify what was happening when it ejected. The best thing to do is run the Console in the Utlities program after it ejects and see if you can see anything that ran at the same time as the eject. Mine hasn't ejected now since August 9th so I'm just keeping everything crossed.

And our unmount problems don't have anything to do with iTunes. Because we haven't running iTunes when we are working with Aperture and the Peagus R6!

A while it work's fine but sometimes it just sudenly it unmounts itselfs.... ???? We still don't now what it is!

We are absolutely livid!

Bought two R6's and at the moment running them both off an 27" iMac (2011) and serving a few stations working Final Cut Pro 7, Motion, Photoshop, Illustrator etc. and they both just keep ejecting all by themselves!

We thought we'd invest in solid file storage which is shared to the whole office but this is just ridiculous!

I have no idea what damage is done with all these ejecting...

They sometimes go offline 4-5 times a day if not more, some days not at all. Really frustrating!

We're a Production/Post-Production house which RELIES of file storage so this is totally unacceptable.

Just plugged the cable to left port of both R6's and both directly to the iMac (no daisy chaining), hopefully this will help though other people doesn't seem to have any more luck this way.

SO frustrating!
