Q: Terminal 1.5.1 does not work.

Details: eMac, Power PC G4 SDRAM: 1GB OS 10.4.11

Hi,

Terminal 1.5.1 is located in Utilities. When I start the app, no window appears. I can go through the menu and open a command line for running a script. Nothing else. What to alter?

Regards,

Hubert.

eMac OS X 10.4.11, iMac OS 9.2.2

    Hi Hubert,

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go.

Move this file to the Desktop for now...

    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Terminal.plist

Reboot, if all is well you can trash the one on the Desktop.

    Hi BDAqua,

I did Repair Permissions and moved the .plist file to the desktop. Reboot, launched Terminal, menu installed, no window and command line.

Before I did this, I had difficulties in quitting Terminal.  I had to Force Quit it. After Repair Permissions it did.

When I click "New Shell" - nothing happens, click on "New Command" a command line appears.

    What do I wrong?

    Regards,

    Hubert.

I think you did right, we just haven't found the whole cause(s) yet.

To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...

Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.

    Does Terminal work there?

Made new account. Loged out > loged in: Terminal: same as original message. Safari didn't work at all.

    Regards,

    Hubert.

    Hmmm,

If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

Though you mght try reinstalling the Combo update first.

The combo update for PowerPC-based Macs...

    Repair Permissions afterwards, reboot.

    WAIT, just found this...

Terminal needs Apple's Monaco font. If that font is disabled or missing, the Terminal window will be very small and unusable, or may not appear at all.

EDIT: in Terminal, right under Terminal menu, do you have Window Settings...>Display>Text:>Set Font? What Font does it say there?

Terminal inspector: Window settings, Display, Text: Monaco .18 as set Font.

First, Combo update, repair permissions and reboot before eventually Archive & Install. Let you know.

    Hubert.

Download 10411comboupdateppc succesfull. Reboot, shiftkey down, permissions repaired, (there was an awful lot wrong) reboot and.......Terminal window appeared. So, this was succesfull.

There are minor difficulties as the cursor is blinking 5 times and shuts down: Command completed. Must do some preference alterations and some studying.

Anyhow, thanks very much and regards,

    Hubert.
