I can no longer remove a keyword from a selection of multiple images--only the highlighted image is affected. I'm trying to use the shift-return method in the control-bar. I can't find an easy work-around (I don't want to add buttons for all my keywords).

The mode of the failure indicates that you have "Primary Only" turned on. There is an icon on the Toolstrip -- click it to toggle "Primary Only" on and off. The icon is a box with a "1" inside.
