OK, with no bootable OS volume, you should be getting at least a grey screen with a question mark folder icon or something similar indicating no bootable volume found.

So what is the history here? Is this a machine just acquired that you are trying to bring up?

How old is the PRAM backup battery? (If unknown or more than a couple of years old or the machine has not been on mains power for some time, then it should be replaced.)

How about the lunar LED over the power switch? Is it on steady after power up or is it flashing? Do you get the normal boot chime?

Can you count the beeps or flashes?

1 beep = no RAM installed

2 beeps = incompatible RAM types

3 beeps = no good banks

4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)

5 beeps = processor is not usable

In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.

Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

There is 2 beeps at start up and then the LED lite does flash twice every few seconds, there are 2 512 MB installed pulled them out and they are the correct ones for this machine PC2-4200. There are 8 ram slots these were installed in the bottom 2 of the top 4 slots should I try other slots?

Have to go to work check back later. Thanks for the help so far.

Ram now installed correctly, new PRAM battery, everything starts up properly but still no video. tried both connections on video card nothing

OK, try to see if video comes up when you boot into open firmware with the cmd-option-O-F keys held down at power up. This is at a pretty machine-fundamental state and is a good indication of whether there is a video card problem. If you do get video at that point, it will be a white terminal screen, and you should enter the following two commands:

reset-nvram <enter>

reset-all <enter>

The first command sets the non-volatile memory to its default values and the second command forces the machine to restart.

I fear you may have a honked video card, but we need to try open firmware to disprove that.
