I was experiencing the same problem and after 4.5 hours with APPLE tech support and escallation to a Sr. level tech, it turns out there was a conflicting PREFERENCES file in the MacIntosh HD/Library/Preferences folder.

Odds are, you have 1000s of files there, so throwing them all away was the easest solution instead of trying to hunt for the bad guy one at a time. I held back my dock and my mail preferences. Dumped the rest.

You will loose mouse and other specific app preferences, but it fixed the iMovie error immediately, after RESTART.

WOW! I couldn't "share" a 3 minute movie, even with 5+ GB of RAM free.

After hours of restarting iMovie, purging the inactive memory, repairing permissions, searching and reading forums, and much other pointless putzing, gonzalofrom562 saved the day.

I moved all projects except the one I was working with to another directory and viola!, problem solved.

Thank you Gonzalo!!!

Problem solved I don't think so. Problem work around yes. But the problem is Apple refusing to fix this long time bug. It was never an issue in ealry versions on early operating systems. It's bloody ridculous. From other issues I've had and using these support community forums I've been told that Apple doesn't even monitor these posts :-(

Just after my last post in this feed, I moved to Screenflow for $99 and have never gone back to iMovie.

I'm fed up with no support from Apple. I like the Apple platform, but their support for their own software systems just STINKS! The number of calls and hours of wasted time I made to Apple Care about iMovie bugs including this Memory issue and other bugs followed by their lame responses and efforts (including having me re-partition my drive, create a new user and then trying to replicate the bugs) was SUCH a waste of time... they even escalated the issue to their top tier of support and after waiting for two weeks, their response and lack of a date for a fix or even when the issue would be put into engineering was totally unacceptable... and I could get nothing back from Apple in the way of a 'written' response that I could escalate in my own way.

I think the most frustrating aspect was that none of the Apple care support folks would acknowledge that these items were issues. "I'm not aware of that problem", "we don't have this noted in our support" etc etc. When I referred them to the dozens of posts in the Support Community they pleaded ignorance.

I would say there is nothing I can't do in Screenflow that iMovie does and a lot more I can do in Screenflow that iMovie could never do. BUT I spent $99 that doesn't help those of you who won't or can't make the investment. Screenflow is very stable, and reminds me a lot of some of Pinacle's products on the Window's side... more timeline oriented.

iMovie is what it is... a great piece of software with some bugs in it that Apple won't address. I've accepted this and moved on and I would recommend to anyone in this forum try and do the same if they can. iMovie is a 'starter' program included for free, not intended for any type of commercial use.

As a former computer industry executive with Atari, I cannot fathom how this type of 'deflect and defeat' or probably more accurately 'deflect and deflate' type of support extended to a loyal customer user base can benefit Apple in the long run.

I tried many suggested solutions, such as moving projects out of the iMovie projects folder or making new copies, but nothing worked. What did work was:

1. quitting all applications

2. moving all my preference files (~/Library/Preferences) into a temporary folder and restaring my Mac. It felt odd since everything has the default settings. After exporting the movie I will copy all the preferences files back and restart (this is optional)

Apperently there is a conflict between some preference files.

I had a similar problem tonight and dreaded doing some of the fixes suggested. My son asked me what I had done previous to the problem and that led to uploading some images to PS C5 and iPhoto. He suggested I quit iMovie and restart iPhoto. Once I did that and restarted iMovie the problem was gone. I will keep you posted if the problem comes back.

Running 10.8.5, iMovie 9.0.9, 2 X 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, mac pro, 3,1, 26GB memmory, SSD 500GB (system), 3TB movie storage drive plus external eSATA drive for resource movies. Rendering to Quicktime a 2:22 hr. project.
