Mac fan won't stop

Mac fan keeps going of and won't stop. It's been like this for a couple of days and the computer is only a few weeks old.

When I look in the Activity Monitor it is the Kernel task that is taking up to 300% CPU and all I am doing is being on MSN and Safari. I don't have a printing task clogging the system which seems to be the problem very often.

The fan just starts up when I'm on safari and keeps up for avery long time, sometimes it calms down again and the Kernel task is down to 1-3% again. And then it starts up again for no reason. This is driving me crazy!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Here's what worked for me: I opened Activity Monitor (which is a Apple utility you should have) and then found that a statistics program (R) was hogging resources. I then killed this app from the Activity Monitor (using the button in the upper right with an X on it) and that stopped my fan.

You are still under warranty. Take full advantage of it.

If you have AppleCare, give them a call. If not, take your MBP to your local Apple Store or AASP. Let them properly diagnose the problem.
