Is anyone else having this problem? I recall this happening in the past - ballooning and exploding batteries. Also, the battery heats up very easily.
Any help on the matter would be appreciated.

I had recently the same problem for a MacBook bought 2007. The keyboard and the mouse-plate started to mark text and delete at random when typing. A friend referred me to http://forum.macworld.se/topic/102960-svullet-batteri/ where it shows that it is an ignored dangerous situations arising from inflated battery pressing underneath the keyboard, that can ultimate explode and flame up. MacSupport (MStore) in Sweden recommended a new battery but gave recommendations for use (recharge, etc) completely at odds as the ones issued by Apple itself at http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html. The store http://www.mstore.se/m4n?oid=51, however, does not answer questions about the divergence between these recommendations and there is the risk for having bought an "old" battery kept several years on shelf in the store, with decreased capacity, or maintaining it wrongly (keeping it under continuous loading vs. recharging it at least once per month). It is a shame that such an expensive quality product is not supported by publicly available warnings and recommendations.
Wow, and just last night, after leaving the MBP off all weekend, I turned it back and within minutes the laptop lifted off the desk. I turned the laptop over and the battery exploded....not w/ a bang, but like a life raft. Very scary!! Mine, too, is a 2007 MBP... was this planned?! :-/ half kidding!!

I had the exact problem with my MacBook from about 2008. The battery started to inflate which caused many problems when touching the touch-pad. It got so bad that I removed the battery and simply use the laptop with the power cable only.
Problem solved... my laptop was stolen.
The theives took the laptop and the charger, but left my battery lying where it was (outside of my computer). Clever crooks...
Late 2008 aluminum macbook. My wife is primary user. Told me last few weeks the trackpad responds erratically. More recently the battery cover seems to be bulging. Finlly removed the battery and found essentially identical to the original poster's exploding (slowly) battery problem.So this must be well known to Apple by now
Works well on AC power now but battery cover clips have been in part dislodged from cover itself, so holding it down with duct tape.
Have an appointment with Apple Store set up by Apple Care but questions:
1.I can't find that a replacement battery exists--anyone know?
2. Can Apple actually repair or replace the battery cover?
3. If not repairable what options?
On occasion of my report Sept 16 2011 (above) I found a new battery for my "old" MacBook (2007) in the Swedish "M-Store". But it was expensive, 1/8 th of the cost of a new MacBook (MacPro). At least this cost should have been refundable by Apple since it is obviously a design failure that implies clear danger for the customer.
Yes, this is the exact problem I have as explained above. No one at Apple will give an answer to this obvious manufacturing problem. I want Apple to supply me a new battery, free of charge. This problem has been reported often and on many venues, so Apple is well aware of this issue.
After calling Apple Care yesterday (still barely under warranty) an appointment was made for me at the Genius Bar at my local Apple store. Luckily a replacement battery was still available and in stock and after briefly examining the logic board area the Genius installed the battery and all seems well. A replacement battery cover was also ordered. All at no charge. My usual good experience with Apple over the last 20 years. Quite a contrast with my one Dell experience.
Per the Genius this problem was well known with the 2008 Macbook battery as it neared the end of useful life (800+ cycles of charging) and no longer occurs with newer machines and their batteries.

You called it good experience? because you got new battery, free of charge, even after warranty well passed?
Apple should officially admit battery related issues and should warn their cusomer for the dangerous problems it might occur.

This is still an issue and I keep waiting for Apple to do the right thing without legal action and offer a free replacement battery. If I install the battery in my MacBook it is rendered almost useless.
Come on Apple, give us a battery....
If you have a MacBook with the removable battery you can get a new third party battery fairly cheap on eBay.

Frederic1943, This is a design/manufaturing issue, not normal wear. If you look around you will see this has been going on for a long time and Apple refuses to make it right. I will use the MacBook with the battery not installed until I can afford to buy a new laptop, but I will never buy a battery to fix what Apple messed up.
