Airport Extreme not getting a valid ip

I decided to upgrade my wireless setup and as I am planning on changing everything to Apple over the next few months I purchased the Airport Extreme with a Draytek Vigor 120 modem. The reviews were good and also reported that this was a fast and simple combination to setup but after many hours I have the following issue:

When in PPPoE mode the AE does not pick up a valid ip.

The Vigor has been reset to factory settings countless times and currently is default (DHCP on). When the AE (also reset many times) is set to Bridge mode this picks up an ip fine but as soon as this is set to PPPoE in order for me to enter my ISP account details the ip resets to 0.0.0.1 and the subnet mask to 255.255.255.255.

I searched the web, apple discussions, support, etc. and have tried everything I can think about including powering off the devices, waiting 15mins, powering the modem on, waiting 15 mins and then powering the AE on but nothing changes.

When selecting PPPoE on the AE the connection sharing tab and ability to manually set a static ip is removed. I ran through the settings with my ISP who have a fantastic support team but they (and I) do agree that it appears to be the AE that is the issue and they cannot help any further.

Sorry if this is a little long winded but I am fairly literate with this stuff and I cannot figure it out.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

With the Draytek configured to provide DHCP services as you indicate, Bridge Mode would be the correct setting for the AirPort Extreme. This would probably be the simplest and most reliable configuration for your devices.

If you want to configure the AirPort Extreme to connect by providing the PPPoE credentials, then you must re-configure the Draytek modem to operate in a simple bridge mode operation. I have not used this particular Draytek model, but I am sure that there must be an option to configure it to operate as a bridge only device.

In other words, if the Draytek provides DHCP, then the AirPort Extreme must be configured in Bridge Mode. If the AirPort Extreme provides DHCP services (as it will when configured to connect using PPPoE), then the Draytek modem must be configured in Bridge Mode.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I reset everything again and configured the modem to use each of the bridged modes within the selection window but the same happens - the AE does not pick up an ip address other than 0.0.0.1 and did give me an error:

"The Apple wifi base station is setup to connect to the internet using PPPoE but no PPPoE server can be found..."

I know that the modem acts as a PPPoE to PPPoA bridge which is indeed what my ISP requires.

I ran through the manual again and did notice that Windows 7 SP1 is required. I have not installed the service pack yet so will run the updates on my pc and try again. I would not imagine this would alter anything but it is running now.

...many more hours spent on this and my patience is wearing thin! In need of assistance if anyone has experience of this:

I tested the Vigor 120 (default settings) by setting a manual connection on a windows xp laptop connected directly to the modem - this worked with no problems therefore the modem works.

With the AE connected to the Vigor and set to:

Connect Using: Ethernet

Connection Sharing: Off (Bridged Mode)

all lights were green and the AE received an ip of 192.168.2.10, subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

I then connected to the internet using the previously created manual connection and everything worked.

As soon as I change the AE to Connect Using: PPPoE and entered the ISP account information the AE status light blinked orange and the ip changed to 0.0.0.1, subnet: 255.255.255.255 and it would neither talk to the Vigor 120 or the internet.

I expect that what should happen in the above config is that the router should obtain the same ip as when in Bridged mode and everything will work however there is no option to manually set the ip in PPPoE mode and I cannot see anything else that can be configured to assist this.

I have also updated my pc fully and now running Windows 7 SP1 although the same happens from the laptop running XP so it looks like an issue or setting somewhere in the AE.

I will try and contact both Apple and Draytek tomorrow for assistance...

Absolutely no further forward yet. I have been in regular contact with Draytek support who now have the syslog from my AE using their capture tool (syslog 4.5.0) found at

http://draytek.com/user/SupportDLUtility.php . This does not tell any more than the log on the AE and I believe the problem is the communication between the AE and the Vigor as the log did not show anything relevant to the internet connection.

Below is a procedure that Draytek sent me after mentioning other people had reported problems with the devices. There were relatively simple pictures which did not copy in but the content is the same.

My last email to Draytek was last night and I shall post a fix when I have one. Please let me know if you (or anyone else) has any suggestions as it should not be this difficult.

Vigor 120 with Airport Extreme configuration guide

This guide is for a BT network ADSL connection with these settings:

VPI: 0

VCI: 38

Protocol: PPPoA

Username & Password required to connect

If your ISP uses other settings, please check the MPoA setup guide for the

Vigor 120 modem or contact support.

Do not connect the Vigor 120 modem up to the Airport router's WAN

port until instructed to do so.

Set up the Vigor 120 modem so that it is on and plugged into the ADSL line, do

not plug it into a PC or router yet.

Wait until the DSL light stops flashing and goes solid, that indicates that it is

ready to pass through the ADSL connection to your router.

The modem is pre-configured for standard UK ADSL connections so will not

need any further setup for an ADSL connection with the settings listed above.

Disconnect the WAN cable from your Airport router if it is currently connected

to another router / modem.

Open the Airport Utility on your computer, this can be found in Finder, under

Applications then Utilities.

Connect to the Airport router with the Airport Utility, right click its icon and

select Restart... to restart it.

Once the Airport router has restarted, access it with the Airport Utility and

select Manual Setup.

From there select the Internet option from the top menu, then on the Internet

Connection tab, configure the settings as shown below - make sure to leave

the Service Name field blank. Enter your ISP's username and password details

here.

Once you have entered those settings, click the Update button and the Airport

router will then restart - while it restarts, plug the Vigor 120 into the WAN

port.

Once the Airport router has restarted, check in the Airport Utility - click Manual

Setup and look at the summary page to check whether it shows an IP address

as highlighted below.

That should then be connected to the Internet.

Troubleshooting:

"When I try to apply the PPPoE settings, it shows an error screen and I can't

apply the changes"

This is because the Airport router has received an IP address from the 120,

please restart the Airport router with the Vigor 120 modem disconnected from

the WAN port, then configure the PPPoE settings.

“The Internet light on my Vigor 120 modem doesn't light up”

The Internet LED on the Vigor 120 modem is not used and will not light even

when there is an internet connection passing through it.

“The Airport Utility Summary page does not show an IP address”

If it does not show an IP address, try reconnecting the Airport Utility to update

the details it shows. If it still does not get an IP address, re-check the

connection settings and try restarting the Airport router once more. If that still

fails, try setting up a PPPoE connection on a PC with the Vigor 120 modem

connected to it and check whether it can establish the connection.

Update: Found out on the Draytek that I had a very low SNR of 7 which caused great instability on the line. It was dropping the connection almost every 30 seconds, creating IP switches on the AE.

Solved by switching the modulation in the Draytek from Multimode to G.DMT.

Everything is stable now for hours.

Only downside, my download speed halved from 8Mbit to 4Mbit.

Still working on that, G.DMT (ADSL 1) should be good for speeds up to 8Mbit Max.

Aug 18, 2011 3:46 AM in response to MacIm

I checked the SNR and it was fine. I cannot remember the exact details but I then tested with G.DMT as mentioned but the same issues remained.

I am still in contact with Draytek daily as everything else has been checked and the Vigor now tested with five different Apple devices all resulting in the same problems. After having spent far too long on the issue I have requested a replacement device and if that fails I will return it to them and use the Apple Airport Extreme and Express devices purchased with my existing Netgear DG834GT which is not great but the combination of devices should give me a stable network.

Thanks for the suggestions anyway but I have run out of patience with this as it was supposed to be a "5 minute setup"!

Well, after many, many hours of testing and numerous correspondance with Draytek the modem has been returned.

I firmly believe the problem lay with the communication between the Vigor 120 not relaying information to the Airport but enough was enough and I am now back using the Netgear 834GT as the modem connected and all the devices are working fine.

I would like to see these devices working together as I read that they were a good match but Draytek were not willing to supply a replacement device.
