On my keyboard what you are calling the backspace key is labeled "delete". What you are calling the delete key is labeled delete [icon] where [icon] is an X in a box with a point on the right side, e.g. forward delete.
In any case if you look at the keyboard shortcuts in the command editor window you'll see that the key your are calling backspace does a "delete" whereas the forward delete key (and the shifted "backspace" key) does a "replace with gap".
Yes, thanks, this is the answer, though not quite as straightforward as you suggest. On the Apple standard European keyboard, only what you call the "Forward Delete" key is marked "Delete" with the little X icon. The backspace key is the same as on any PC keyboard and is just marked with a <-- (left-facing arrow). FCP X Help menu tells you to press a delete key with a little X icon, and if you look hard you can see that it points to the left and not the right. However there is no such marked key on our Apple keyboards. Hence the confusion (and a black pip to Apple).
Thanks for getting back, Tom. That doesn't seem to work for audio clips created when using the Record Audio window. My work flow is to do voice over this way and then edit and delete unwanted sections using the range tool. The Record Audio automatically produces gap clips along with the audio, since I sometimes record audio before I add video. I have tired to do ripple deletes but always end up with a gap and then having to drag and reposition the clips to close the gap. If you can suggest a way around this it would save me so much time. When I saw this thread it made think maybe I was using the wrong keyboard shortcut.
That's not a storyline. That's a connected clip. Select the connect clips that are in line and press Cmd-G to make a storyline. The delete key will ripple delete. Shift-delete will make a gap. Shift-delete for ripple delete is for obsolete versions of the application.
You're using the wrong delete key. Use the large delete key next to equals, not the forwad delete key.
Izzy says use the Delete key. You suggest the backspace, I think. Certainly I find using the 'Delete' key that the gap does not close.
Either you are using the forward delete key. Right pointing arrow or the position tool is active.
So, is there a way to ripple delete (no gap) without an extended keyboard? I use a macbook pro and only have one delete key (above the return key). Thanks!
The delete key in the storyline will ripple delete.
You'd better post a screen shot of what you're seeing in the timeline. Is the voice over in a storyline?
My eyes have been opened. Thanks, Tom! You are THE MAN, as they say. I think I need to do some background reading. Meanwhile, this will transform my workflow no end.🙂
