external hard disk drive not showing / connecting 10.6.8

Recently upgraded to 10.6.8 BUT my USB 2 Buffalo External Drive is no longer showing up on my

Mac Book Pro 13" Early 2011 Edition. it's got all my work on it, and I'm very new to the Mac OS

I am using a Powered D-Link 4 Port USB Hub and it was working fine, running a Mouse the USB Hard Disk Drive and 1 Midi Keyboard

it's just the Drive not showing up, it powers the Drive but no communication at all, not even the Unrecognised Drive / Format logo pops up.

please help!

I went to Finder and Searched /Volumes and only my Macintosh HD and DVD Disc Drive Icons are showing,

it used to display a Yellow Hard disk icon with its name.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.7), 4GB RAM

can disk utility see the drive ?

in finder > preferences > general. is this box ticked ?

also, finder > preferences > sidebar

I'm having the same isue. Downloaded Lion and install it succesfully, but any of my external hard drives doesn't show up. They appear in Disk Utility, I tried to mount them from here and this is what it came up (see image)

Learnt some very important things here, many thanks to Jolly Giant!

I learnt that External Drives must be EJECTED properly to avoid file corruption

I had to Scan Disk and Defrag using Windows 7 to sort out any bad sectors,

Checked through your post to the letter all showing up now have not tested with Firewire chain yet

but it all looks good, cheers Jolly Giant! Solved.

@esadr make sure you >Eject< drives before pulling out the USB lead, I made that mistake,

Try to Scan Disk for Errors or Bad Sectors, corrupt start up files, its easily done and easily fixed,

maybe Jolly Giant can tell us how to do this in a Mac Book Pro? I did mine in Windows 7 PC.

Thanks very much, but my problem seems to be that Lion doesn't support NTFS format. Found out about this after I have made the update to Lion. I have installed several plugins for mac to read NTFS, such as MacFUSE AND NTFS for Mac OS X and any luck yet. So if you know some solution for it, I will be very happy to hear.

I've had the exact same problem and needing a solution as well. My itunes AND iphoto libraries are on a NTFS drive. Needing to restore my ipad 2, but can't until ntfs and macfuse have an update for lion. Frustrating! 😠

You are not alone, i have the same problem too. It is really non sense. I tought that i am upgrading my software not downgrade!

Dear all, i've found the solution. intalled PARAGON NTFS and it worked just perfect, all my external drives formatted as ntfs are now working fine.

installing versions of Paragon NTFS older than 9.0 do not solve the issue. (actually i started experiencing the problem after installing the paragon ntfs v.7 or v8)
