How do I use Restore in Disc Utility

I recently changed my internal hard drive as I was getting the Blue Screen of Death and since I got my new one I realised I can use Disk Utility to restore all the files on the old drive onto an external HD.

I simply thought I select old HD as the source and then the formatted external HD as the destination and click restore. When I do this it brings up the error "Restore Failed, Could not Restore, Input/Output Error." I tried it then with "erase destination" ticked but that just brings up the same error and unmounts the externalHD and made me reformat it. I have been using Mac for 5 years now so I believe I am pretty familiar with them but this has me lost.

I have searched for similar issues and came up with nothing, hence new discussion started. Would anybody have any experience with this or any tips on how to get this working please.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

If the disk is still working relatively well, and the file system isn't damaged, yes. If OSX can't read it well enough to copy it, no.

Try running Repair Disk on it.

I take it you don't have backups?

it doesnt seem to be too damaged, when i select my old HD and put it in as source and then click on image it allows me to view everything that is on the old HD...i tried running repair disk but it gave an error message...i cant quite remember the error msg but i will try it again and copy in here the error msg tomorrow

If the repair fixes some things but not others, run it again (and again) until it either fixes everything or can't fix anything else.

If it can't fix everything, it's possible a heavy-duty disk repair app like Disk Warrior can. It costs about $100, and can often fix things Disk Utility can't, but there's no guarantee it can fix everything.

ok so i put the old HD back in the laptop and tried again, the error msg i was getting before doesnt seem to appear anymore and when i run Repair Disk it shows as "Volume Mac HD appears to be ok" I ran repair disk 4 times all with the same answer

Also ran repair disk permissions and that came back as complete. When I tried Restore again I got the same error message...it starts off as calculating...then

Restore Failure

Could not Restore - Input/Output Error....

I really dont know what else I can do
