    I no longer have this problem with Mountain Lion.  But I can say that after a lot of time dealing with this problem, it's safe to unplug the drive as long as there's no reading/writing. It is particularly safe if the computer was sleeping and the drive will not wake.


    Unplugging will immediately unfreeze the Finder.

    I upgraded Moutain Lion (10.8) to the lastest version, and I never had the problem with my usb3.0 Iomega drive.

    Unfortunately, I could not test with Lion (10.7) system update - on which I got the same issue with the same drive - so far.

    It seems that apple finally (after 2 years) found a solution...

    Problem returns once you install Mavericks.
