Getting Sony video/DVD files into iMovie - HELP!

Firstly, apologies if this has been covered before but I'm not only new to Mac's but also to the world of video editing.

I have 2 camcorders; a Sony mini DVD machine (DCR-DVD201E) and a Sony MICRO MV unit (DCR-IP7E). I currently use the 201E but have a fair number of MICRO MV tapes from the IP7E that I'd like to play with using iMovie.

Having done some homework, it seems that I need to connect the camcorders to my iMac with a Firewire cable but this is not available for the 201E and the IP7E appears to have an iLink cable that looks totally different.

All I want to do is to get these video clips into iMovie and create something that looks good to then burn to a DVD using iDVD. Video editing was one of the main reasons I switched to a Mac after years with PC's, in the belief that it would be easier. Have I wasted my time and money or am I missing something?

Any help would be most welcome and apologies once again for the 'newcomer' mail... I have a lot to learn about this game 🙂

Thanks in advance,
Dominic

Thanks for the quick reply Sue. I've got Streamclip working hard in the background as I type this response 🙂

I did notice from the help files that I need something called "DVHS Cap" to convert MICRO MV files to a format that can then be handled by Streamclip. Do you know what this application is and where i can get hold of it? Oh, and whether I really need it!

Thanks in advance,
Dom.
