Data Roaming? What does this do?

What exactly is "data roaming"? I get a very weak signal from AT&T at work, but they have the Verizon repeater there so everyone with a Verizon phone gets great coverage. Doesn't data roaming mean it will pick up the signal from other carriers and provide data coverage?

Thanks for anyone who knows how this works!

Data roaming means if your cell provider, in this case AT&T, has NO presence in the area you are located then you will be switched to another provider in the area who has a compatible system and an agreement of some type with AT&T. If you go to Europe and leave this on you can run up an enormous data bill.

Verizon is not a partner nor do they have a compatible system, and AT&T has a presence in your area, so data roaming does not apply in your case.
