Service options for Video Controller failing AHT

My macbook pro fails the Apple Hardware test and is not under any hardware warrenty. Does anyone know what my service options are?

Error: AHT 4VDC/1/40000003:VideoController

Is this something I can do myself?

What are the general cost & time if apple does it?

I plan on going to the Genius Bar shortly but figured more information via this forum wouldn't hurt.

Hi b,

That is part of the logic board. Repair means replacing the logic board. Check out ifixit and powerbookmedic for illustrated guides.

I see you have the NVIDIA 8600 GPU, so you may be in for a free replacement. 😉

You may havethe NVIDIA issue. First, go to System Profiler > Hardware > Graphics/Displays and see if you have the GeForce 8600M GT GPU. This is the GPU covered under the free repair program. While there, also look at PCIe LaneWidth. If it says anything other than x16, the GPU has issues. If you have the 8600 GPU, bring the MBP to an Apple Store or AASP for testing. I went to the Genius Bar who ran their in-house HW & SW diagnostics. In the end it appeared to be a logic board problem and since there was a known issue with the hardware they covered the cost to repair it. Works for me 🙂

After several days I reclaimed my MBP in working order.

Had a hunch it might be the NVIDIA issue. Glad they were able to repair if for free for you. 😉
