FC Server and "Managed Copy" of Asset

I'm new to FC Server. Simple question. My colleague put prores assets on our FC Server. I need to get at them to edit on my Mac, remotely. Do I cache and check them out? Or do I just copy them over to my computer to edit with?

It's just he and I as FC Server users. I need to edit something with the assets he uploaded. FC Server does not need to keep track of my changes/edit - they will be independent.
