Q: Logic Pro 8 is not supported under Lion?

Is there a reason why Logic Pro 8 is NOT supported by  Lion. I have been holding off buying Logic 9  for the next Logic release and now I am a little dead in the water. Is my only real option to go back to Snow Leopard? I still don't understand how Logic 8 and Intel native app could fall over.

Is there a way to fix/modify Logic's icon on the Dock so that it works with the trick?

Sort of, but it will take a little work - read the first page of this thread for an explanation:

This is a great popcorn thread: highly entertaining with no relevance whatsoever!

Apple is not gonna release an update for an application that was last updated more than 3 years ago (Logic Pro 8.0.2 shipped in May 2008), more than a full year before SnowLeopard - not Lion! - shipped... Even the next major version of Logic (9.0.0) shipped 2 months before SnowLeopard!

Jeeze... is that you Markus, if not you sure sound like him.

Still wielding disdain for the people that purchase your software I see.

    Excuse me... Apple's software.

Yes it was three years since Logic 8 was updated but it would take that much to make it Lion compatible?

Good PR for a company that seems to be abandoning it's Pro user base. It's only one version behind the current.

this is an absolute joke, i've just spoken to someone at apple care who said that it wasn't forced upon me to uprgade to lion and I should of checked it was compatible. which yes is understandable, however, i think that a company should be responsible for it's software and if they are uprgading to a new system, then ALL applications should be compatible with it.

i've been told the only way I can get Logic Pro to work is to upgrade to Logic Pro 9 for £166. I think after buying an Macbook Pro, and the Logic 8 software and the Lion OS X, i think it's a bit rich for apple to turn round and say, oh you need to spend another £166.

    ******* joke.

So the workaround referenced in this very thread doesn't work for you?

Remember Apple are a business & they're not going to actively tell you how to run unsupported software on their operating system when they can convince you to purchase a supported upgrade for £166 which definitely IS the preferred solution, just not neccessarily the customer's!

I bought a superb graphics card for a Dell workstation a few years back that took up 2 PCI slots but was unable to be accommodated at the back of the chassis.  I phoned Dell to ask them if cutting a big hole in the back of the computer would solve my problem.  It would, of course, but Dell support refused to confirm that it would solve the problem.  Saying "Yes, cut a massive hole in the back of your Dell workstation that'll do it" isn't exactly the professional technical support Dell want to be offering it's customers.

I digress.  Also, politically, bugs in their software/hardware don't go hand-in-hand with their "It just Works" sales pitch & could potentially lose customers.  Ironic, of course, that they've stopped Logic 8 from traditionally launching in OSX Lion completely.

As Rob said, check his fix earlier on in the thread.  It definitely works with no problems so far.  Can't say much for 3rd party plugins & whatnot of course, but then those companies are responsible for their own fixes, not Apple.

I think inevitably Logic 10 will be released & you'll see the Logic 9 upgrade come down in price either through the Apple store or elsewhere on the net.  To be fair though, if this fix continues to function adequately then personally, I don't see any immediate need to upgrade to L9 anyway.

That's not the way it works with Apple, if/when Logic X is released, L9 immediately comes off the shelf and is no longer sold, nor will there be any updates for that product.

Agreed. Once the new version comes out then Logic 9 will be EOL'd and the best you could do would be to find NOS (new old stock) from a reseller, or perhaps on Amazon.

I scored a boxed new copy of Logic Studio on Amazon for $420, not a huge discount but every little bit helps.

I see.  That's not the best news. Is an L8 to LX upgrade likely or is that part & parcel of L8 no longer being supported?

Well if it's anything like the Final Cut X debut in price then there likely won't be an upgrade price due to the over all reduction.

GarageBand and Logic already share simliar achitecture and some features so I don't think it will be the same drastic overhaul that Final Cut saw. We wil likely see the apps unbundled in Final Cut though. Seperate downloads for Logic, MainStage, etc.

and no doubt, it will be a download from the Mac App Store.

i've just tried to install logic studio 8 onto Lion, as I deleted it to try and get logic 9 but couldn't find a serial number for it.

when i tried to install it, it said that PC Program or something wouldn't run on Lion so basically I can't even install it anymore.

My mate has Logic Studio 8 the same as I did but he's still on snow leapord, if i copied every file logic studio 8 needs to work from his macbook onto mine and copied it in the same places, would that mean logic would work, or not?

Can you restore from Time Machine or other backup?

In addition to checking compatibility before doing a major OS or software update, it's important to do a full backup as well.

I had the same problem when i installed Lion and i am Logic pro 8 user..  What can i say? I think this is totally not nice that Apple denies its own programms.. If i want to upgrade my logic pro 8 to a 9 i should decided my self if and when i want to do, the same i did with snow leopard to Lion.. It was my choice..

I was never dissapointed by Apple, this time i kinda did.. Apple is company that take care every detail of its products.. When i downloaed and install Lion i was never expected that Logic pro 8 product from Apple will not work. The last 5 year i work with apple products have a mac pro and mac book pro and Logic 7 and 8, was very satisfied products never crush and just works..

After i install my lion copy the first thing before run my Logic i checked for any available updates regarding my version of Logic.. Lion didnt find any update and i happy that my machine was ON and RUNNING.. Then i clicked my logic icon to start the programm and saw that dissapointed message..

Steve Jobs in a conference spoke about Costumers satisfactionnot long time ago.. Thats their first priority(he said).. He said that in a conference for iPhone 4 because its antenna problems..

So what i want to say is.. For the moment i am not satisfied at all, and if apple wont make any update regarding Lion for Logic pro 8 i will be definetly dissapointed..

For the moment i run my logic 8 with Show package contents trick..

I didnt by Apple to open an Apple programm with a trick.. I buy Apple because it works....

I dont want to be dissapointed ..
