Traditional chinese handwriting lost in OS X Lion

When I upgrade to OS X Lion, I could choose the traditional chinese hand writing as the input method but it doesn't work. I can't input chinese character by using handwriting

Well, after another week of kicking it around, can this be it:

When you activate the writing pad, you HAVE to wait for the loading process to completely finish (which can take up to 30 seconds), then everything works right. I have tested this repeatedly over the past week and it is almost as reliable as SL when it is working.

This is still insanely insane. How about fixing this in 10.7.2, before more fake Apple Stores are open up on the other side!

In OS 10.6.8, I use the Input Menu in the menu bar and therefore there is no need to go into System Preferences.

(1) For Simplified Chinese, select a Simplifed input method, e.g. Pinyin - Simplified. Then Control + Shift + Space to get the writing box. You can handwrite Simplified Chinese in the Handwriting character window.

(2) For Traditional Chinese, select a Traditional input method, e.g. Pinyin - Traditional. Then Control + Shift + Space to get the writing box. You can handwrite Traditional Chinese in the Handwriting character window.

(3) Suppose you want to type in English but want to have Simplifed Chinese Handwriting input. In the Input Menu, select a Simplifed input method, e.g. Pinyin - Simplified. Then Control + Shift + Space to get the writing box. You can handwrite Simplified Chinese in the Handwriting character window but any typing would be in English.

(4) Suppose you want to type in English but want to have Traditional Chinese Handwriting input. In the Input Menu, select a Traditional input method, e.g. Pinyin - Traditional. Then Control + Shift + Space to get the writing box. You can handwrite Traditional Chinese in the Handwriting character window but any typing would be in English.

Sorry, forgot to write a step in (3) and (4).

I have not upgraded to Lion yet (eventually will). Just want to tell my experience in 10.6.8 and see whether it would be useful or not.

Your intentions are good, but if you read the other postings you should be able to see that the entire reason this discussion exists is because some things which work just fine in 10.6.8 do not work in 10.7. In general posting in forums where you have no experience using the software being discussed is not that likely to be helpful and can also be misleading for other participants.

Well, you have 3 pages of postings here from over a month ago saying that Traditional Chinese handwriting input does not work in Lion without various tricks. It does happen to work at present for me, using 10.7.2, but I only know a few characters, so I can't judge whether it meets the requirements of real Chinese writers. Hopefully it will work right for you when you upgrade.

I found a solution that has work for me.

when you bring up the "trackpad handwriting" ctrl-shift-space,

1. Click "pause" on the lower left corner of the trackpad.

2. Click where you want to input the chinese character,

3. Click TOP Part of the Trackpad window where it says "Handwriting",

4. Click "click to resume handwriting",

if you click anyother spot, you will lose the curser, and you need to start over.

And you need to do these steps everytime - pause, place the curser, "handwriting", "resume".

it had worked for me every time. This is a strange bug, I think when you bring up the handwriting pad, it does not know where to insert the chinese character for some reason, even thought the curser is where you wanted it to be.

I went to an Apple shop to try my method on Lion. It worked well.

What I can write in the Handwriting character window depends on what Chinese input method that I have selected last time.

For example, if I use the Input Menu in the menu bar to select a Traditional input method, e.g. Pinyin - Traditional, then when the Handwriting character window is called up, the writing is automatically set to the Traditional style.

This applies similarily to the Simplified Chinese handwriting case.

Once in the Traditional Chinese mode, even if I write a Simplified Chinese character in the Handwriting character window, the window will give me the corresponding Traditional character instead.
