Synology NAS with OS X Lion

Some NAS Drives don't work with Lion. This is because Apple uses Netatalk 2.2. Most NAS Systems have

still 2.1 that is not fully compatible with the new imlplementation..

For Synology NAS Drives there's a updated Firmware, but it's still BETA!

So if you don't want to use BETA Firmware on your NAS, wait until end of august until final release.

I Just installed the DSM 3.2 Beta from Synology. Timemachine works as fine as with Snow Leopard again..

Download Lion compatible BETA firmware for your Synology NAS :

Before selecting the TimeMachine Backup Volume :

- Restart your Diskstation

- Restart Lion

- open Finder

- Press CMD + K ( Go to - Connect with Server)

- Enter the Server Adress : afp://Server (Server stands for the IP Adress of your Synology Disk Station)

This uses the Apple File Protocol to connect all Files on your DiskStation, don't use an existing SMB Share!

- a list of available Volumes on your Diskstation appears, you can make multiple selections

After ok/connect, all Volumes appearing in Finder.

Open Timemachine, select Backup Volume, start Backup. Works!

Thanks for posting!

Please explain how it works! I've tried, but found no solution. I know there are different "solutions", as enabling the DHCAST128 , as explained here : http://www.alexanderwilde.com/2011/04/os-x-lion-connection-error-with-afp-and-wo rkaround/

This worked not for me..

Since Synology itself said that 10.7 will not work with DSM 3.1 via AFP, i'm happy it works with DSM 3.2 flawless.

I think this is horrible on Apple's part. This should have been another protocol like AFPS Apple File Protocol Secure or something. Then we could have a choice to use the secure version when NASs start supporting it with a stable (read non-beta) release of an OS. Of all things to break backups should be one that you approach with caution. Now I have to install a beta update for my DiskStation 1511+ that cannot be reverted which could result in data loss or not back anything up which could result in data loss.

Many more comments to make when I find the right places to make them.

That's very interesting that Synology says it doesn't work! Although I have to ammend my remarks with the fact that we don't use Time Machine backups with our 1511 drive—we use it as a general file server, so maybe that's why I'm getting such positive results. We're easily able to connect to all the volumes on our drive via AFP, although connecting via SMB as a workaround was perfectly acceptable as well, I have to say.

Because the Problem was well known in dev groups, i wrote to the Synology support 20 days ago concerning the Timemachine/AFP Problems..

The answer from Synology :

"Greetings Markus,

Unfortunately, it is not supported at the moment. Our technicians have been working on supporting OS X 10.7, especially for TimeMachine backup lately, and the update version would be available in Q3 release. Please be noted about our release notes on the official website then. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Normal File transactions via AFP/SMB works fine with the current stable DSM 3.1 Version. I've tested DSM 3.2 Beta for 3 days now. Made a full timemachine backup and normal File transfers. Works perfekt!

I've connected the Synology NAS to a TP-Link 1043ND Router. Everything, including Time Machine works perfectly over WLAN.

Can you explain your problem with the wireless connection!? The Mac makes no difference if the device is wired or connected via wlan when connected. Did you use the Synology Assistant to find your NAS ? Are your Firewall Setting correct ? Checked DHCP Settings in your Router and NAS ? Do you use a (USB) WLAN Adapter with your NAS ?

Do you use a static IP in your DS1010+ ? Do you have the problem while transfering data or is it while the NAS is in idle mode ? Have you checked the hibernation time ?

If you use DHCP, how's your Adress lease time configured ? I've tested today.. Idle Time of the NAS 60 Minutes, DHCP Lease time in Router 120 Minutes.. Ok - the NAS disappeared from finder. I restarted my router, and the Diskstation was shown immediately in finder.

So i've reconfigured my NAS to static IP and did not change hibernation time.. Problem did not appear.

My computers and iDevices using all static IP adresses. In my case it's more stable.

Hi all,

I'm having similar but different issues working with Synology and Lion. It seems that the 3.2 beta failed for me and now I'm stuck. I've attached a description of the problem belowl:

I have an old Macbook running 10.6.X(8?) and a new Air running 10.7.1.

Before buying my Air everything was fine. I bought my air and couldn't connect to the NAS so I upgraded it's DSM to 3.2 beta.

Since updating, none of my computers (all mac) can connect to the NAS. The servers (both file and tm) initially show up in the finder. However, when I click on them I get an error that the server is no longer available.

I can connect to the NAS via the typical web login for configuration. Nothing seems weird there.

Note: this is happening on both versions of the OS and I cannot access any data from remote computers. I've tried a reset and re install of the DSM via system reset and restore. Could anyone provide assistance?

On a separate topic, do any of you dump out your data from the NAS to a second backup device (external hard drive)?

I'm thinking I should get this setup quick so as to at least get my data off the device.

Same issue as above... sort of.

I upgraded to 3.2B and everything worked for a bit. Then it stopped working on Lion and older systems.

The drive initially shows in the finder, but when I try to connect, I get a message about the server being the wrong address or no longer available. Again, when I use the synology assistant, I can connect fine.

Hi!

I have a DS4111+11 running DSM3.2 with a Macbook Pro running 10.6.8.

I am new to networking on the mac and have followed your directions which were successful.

I was also sucessful using smb://<ipaddress>/folder.

Here is my question.

On a windows machine if I map a drive to a share and tell windows to persistenlt map this drive, when I reboot my PC the mapped drive stays conected as expected.

When I access the Synology via my Macbook pro as stated by using AFP://<ipaddress>/folder I can access that folder fine, however if I reboot the mac the OS does NOT retain the mapping and I have to go into "connect to server" everytime.

Is there a way to make this automatically?

thanks for any help available
