I just installed Lion and having problems getting iChat to work. It won't signon to my aim account. I tried deleting all accounts and restarting.

I had the plugin Chax install which is an extension to iChat. I was wondering if anyone else was having problems?

Thanks

I actually fixed the problem by removing the Chax plugin and doing a quick restart.

I'm having issues.  Ichat fired up, says no accounts and Preferences is greyed out...

Also having issues with Yahoo IM as well..

I am having that same problem. It happens after I open iChat then log out from iChat. My aim account disappears from the system preferences and all the menus for iChat are grayed out. Also this prevents FaceTime from working. Restarting the Mac fixes the problem only for a short time, then after a while the same problem occurs.

just keep on restarting your mac ... every time there is a problem ^^ thats how i solved it ...

Well, that is not really a fix or an answer to the problem. Is this just a glitch that needs to big fixed or something else going on?

So I had something weird just happen. When time machine started to back up my facetime opened up. Also I could bring iChat back up. I guess my question is, is anyone else using time machine?

Same issue here. Accounts are there, then they vanish. Reboot sometimes makes them come back, sometimes they're still gone and can't be added back through iChat nor through System Prefs > mail, contacts, calendars.

When accounts ARE present it just says 'connecting...' and never does....ALTHOUGH I see me as being offline, my buddies are seeing me as online and can send messages which come through, even though I can't do anything back because iChat claims I'm offline.

Dear Apple, spend some of your $27billion on making stuff that works. K thx bye

I was having this exact problem, and then something weird happened. Time Machine started backing up and randomly facetime opened. Now I have not had any problems at all. All my accounts are back and iChat seems to be working fine. I know this is not a fix but if you are using time machine attempt to back up with time machine and see if it does anything for you.

When I try to start iChat from the dock, it will not start.

When I go to LaunchPad and start it there, no problem at all.

iChat crashes on launch, not good. Repaired permissions, still no go.

I have ichat running but when I type a message it sends it before I hit send... so its useless. this was one of the main reasons I wanted to upgrade

I did a more drastic version of this and it seems to have worked.

Library is now hidden in finder, so you have to use the "GO" menu > Connect to Folder

and type  /Users/YOURNAME/Library/ into the box.

    ***

Navigate to this location in the Finder:

    Macintosh HD/users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Preferences

    And delete the following files:

    com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist

    com.apple.ichat.plist

    com.apple.ichat.subnet.plist

    com.apple.ichatAgent.plist

    ***

I did an extra step - I went to Caches (in the main Library folder) and deleted the folder com.apple.iChat

    Reboot. And it worked.

Before you empty trash make a copy of everything you're about to delete in case it entirely breaks.

I can't guarantee it will work, but it's fixed all of my iChat issues here, and I figured I had nothing to lose anyways.
