Secondary click in Lion, Macbook Pro 4,1

I have an early 2008 macbook pro (Macbook Pro 4,1).

In Lion, the only way to right-click is using ctrl+click. If I select "Secondary click" in System Preferences/Trackpad, it gets automatically un-selected when I exit System Preferences. This is very frustrating. Any idea how to fix it?

Any file with a "." is a hidden file. I usually just use Terminal to see hidden files using the "ls -a" command, but if you are not comfortable with Terminal then it will be difficult. There probably is some way to show hidden files in Finder, but I wouldn't know how.

Anyway, I deleted the .GlobalPreferences.plist file and still no right click. I even deleted the lockfile and nothing. Also created a second account, and right click is indeed selected by default. But, right click still doesn't work, even on the new account.

Just for good measure I booted into single user mode, deleted the .GlobalPrefences.plist files, and rebooted. STILL no right click.

The good news is I have almost trained my brain to use Control + Click, bad news, still no two finger right click.
