Q: Secondary click in Lion, Macbook Pro 4,1

I have an early 2008 macbook pro (Macbook Pro 4,1).

In Lion, the only way to right-click is using ctrl+click. If I select "Secondary click" in System Preferences/Trackpad, it gets automatically un-selected when I exit System Preferences. This is very frustrating. Any idea how to fix it?

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7), MBP4,1

Just chiming in – same problem, same machine - MacBook Pro 4,1.  I'm surprised that something so basic was missed.  This isn't even a new  feature afterall.

I have a MacBookPro3,1 and it had the same problem. It only happens after you change the preferences. By default a user has two finger click enabled. So just create a new user account, move your files and do not change the preference until there is a confirmed fix. Or get a magic mouse.

Hey guys, can anyone else reproduce the case that starting a new account, without updating preferences gets the secondary right-click to work?  Does it work using the guest account?

If it does work, then it's a problem with the Settings app and how it stores the preferences.  Which means there should be a workaround possible.

Yes, I can confirmed. I copied the file

    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.trackpad.plist

which is the one modified by the System Preferences (I checked with fseventer), but it did not work. So the preferences must be stored in some other part.

OK I have found a fix. I'm sure it can be done better than this, but:

    1. move your Library/Preferences folder to Preferences-old

    2. create a new account and copy its Library/Preferences folder to your library

    3. move back the non-apple pref files from Preferences-old

Actually I think you only need to replace the .GlobalPreferences.plist, can someone test this?

Same problem here with an early 2008 macbook pro. I hope Apple fixes this soon or that someone finds a workaround...

I also noticed that there is no way to configure the middle mouse button (pressing the wheel) to work as a terciary button!!!!!!!! Apple, a lot of us rely on this 3rd button to Pan in contless CAD softwares!!! I could'nt care less about Mission Control or Dashboard!!!! WHERE IS THE MOUSE CONFIGURATION SCREEN!!!!

Can someone try to delete the file:

    ~/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist

and logout/login again, and see if it works? For me, it did the trick - i can double-finger click for right click.

This did not work for me. All Apple preferences were reset to the defaults, but the secondary click still doesn't work, and the secondary video still doesn't play when hovering over that opition.

    I can't see the .globalpreferences.plist file

I can get the preferences folder, but there is no file starting by "."

    thanks

Any file with a "." is a hidden file. I usually just use Terminal to see hidden files using the "ls -a" command, but if you are not comfortable with Terminal then it will be difficult. There probably is some way to show hidden files in Finder, but I wouldn't know how.

Anyway, I deleted the .GlobalPreferences.plist file and still no right click. I even deleted the lockfile and nothing. Also created a second account, and right click is indeed selected by default. But, right click still doesn't work, even on the new account.

Just for good measure I booted into single user mode, deleted the .GlobalPrefences.plist files, and rebooted. STILL no right click.

The good news is I have almost trained my brain to use Control + Click, bad news, still no two finger right click.
