Why does Safari hang in OS X Lion?

I'm going to add "me too" too!

I also can't access Mail's Preferences without the app crashing.

im having the same problem.. firefox works though, but im used to safari :/

I turned off the on-access scanner on Sophos and so far hang problems on Safari and Mail have disappeared.

Nice try, but not the solution for me...

I don't have any Mail problems...yet!

Firefox is working okay, but Chrome just stopped responding.

I have similar problems with Safari after installing Lion this afternoon. Safari will work for a bit, but will then

hang up while viewing web pages. Sometimes it will hang up so bad that the system completely hangs up -- cannot switch to other applications, computer shutdown from the menu doesn't work, and trying to quit Safari doesn't work. I have to turn the computer off with the power button to get the new MacPro back.

eMail and other programs are working fine.

I've fixed mine for now by taking it out of 32-bit mode...knock on Al.

Seems to me it's just a problem that fixes itself after maybe making some internal learning/diagnostic steps, I have Sophos back up and in 32 bit mode and Safari is working fine. Weird. Now to get a pdf plugin that works. . .

Remove all third party add-ons and "haxies" for Safari as well as all Mac "anti-virus" apps and kernel extensions as well as apps like Little Snitch until you can verify Lion versions are available.

I run none of the above and have never had a problem with Safari "hanging."

Does this include removing third-party plugins such as Flash? It seems Adobe plugins may not yet be fully compatible. See http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/905/cpsid_90508.html

I just downloaded Firefox and it also hangs on a page with "flash" in the URL.

I suspect Adobe.

Not only does Safari hang a lot, but many other applications seem to hang very often.

Desktop&ScreenSaver, App Store..

The worst as far as I know is QuickTime does not play videos properly at all.

There are hideous lags in pictures.

A bit dissapointed to be honets and it is irritating.

There aren't many posts on hang ups in Lion, are they?

You need to determine what might be causing these issues on your system; it sounds like a network app like an anti-virus or filtering app may be having issues.

I and many, many other people have been running Lion for months now without hangs other than those caused by third party apps.

Flash usually crashes rather than cause hangs but Adobe admits up front Flash Player on Lion should still be considered "beta" level support.
