Apple Mouse: Reverse Wheel Button (why did they change it?)

Hi All,

My Macbook just rebooted from Snow Leopard -> Lion upgrade. I also took the three updates after the upgrade.

Annoying as it sounds, my Apple mouse now scrolls in reverse. Scrolling the button away from the chair moves the screen to the bottom rather than the top, and vice-versa.

Any ideas on how to get the mouse to behave normally?

the reverse scrolling is Apple's new default. It is intuitive for touchpads but might be confusing for traditional mices.

There is a tiny little free app around called "Scroll reverser for Mac OS X". it does exactly what its name implies.Launch it and you're done - set it to run on login and it will be permanent until you uncheck it to do so..

For Snow Leo it makes Lions new default way the active one, but on Lion it switches the mode back to how it worked in SL originally. You might want that app ( or something similar - I bet there will be lots of those tweakers available soon ).

This implementation mirrors the way scrolling on the iPhone or iPad work. If you want to disable it, open up the preferences for the trackpad. There is an option at the top of the Trackpad preferences for "When using gestures to scroll or navigate, move content in direction of finger movement." Simply uncheck the box and it will go back to what you are used to doing.

Hey everyone,

The reason that apple calls this "Natural" scolling is because it is natural. Take a sheet of paper and put it on you desk (yes, a real sheet of paper, not a virtual one and a real desk!). Now try to move the paper and up and down against that surface. You'll find that you have to move your fingers up to move the sheet up so that you can read futher down the sheet. This is Natural and this is the thinking behind the iOS and the new "Natural Scrolling" that Apple has enabled.

It drove me nuts but once I realized what Apple was doing, it quite frankly does make more sense. It took me about a month and now I wont' go back. I use the regularl scrolling at work on PC's and now I can transition without even thinking about it.

Basically think about it like you are moving the paper that the text is on and NOT the text itself (Or Web page). Then this type of scrolling will seem natural to you.

Conversly with traiditional scrolling you are moving the text up and now and not the paper behind it.

The 'old' way the scroll wheel/ball/whatever was tied to the scroll bar indicator. Apple is working to remove the scroll bar. On my desktop I like the scroll bar, it provides me a clear indicator of how much and what part of a document/web page that I'm viewing. On small screens it makes sense to minimize the size of the scroll bar.

Both methods are natural as long as you realize what part of the OS interface you are manipulating.

Have tried intuitive scroll for months and simply hate it and am desperate to change it back! Unchecking the box in preference/mouse doesn't work. It works in reverse whether the box is checked or not. I believe this solution doesn't work for IMAC. I have an apple nmouse that came with the IMAC so not clear why there should be any problem? Please help!!

While I understand what Apple is trying to do with scrolling my experiece tells me that Apple has little sympathy for those of us that have been using a third party scroll wheel mouse and should they have sympathy that is? I, for one, have been happily using a third party scroll wheel mouse for many years with no problem. Since the Mountain Lion upgrade many of us found that the scroll wheel now works in the opposite direction. Some have told us in so many words to get used to it. I for one am trying to get used to it and am having a difficult time. The problem in getting used to something new from what we've been doing for years is not always that easy or sometimes possible as we have what is known as muscle memory. For those of you that play golf and formed bad habits and then try to retrain yourself to undo those bad habits you know how difficult that can be. Muscle memory seems to have a life of its own. What I do not understand is why the companies that make these scroll wheel mice do not just readjust their software to make the scroll wheel direction programable. Seems to me that would be a very simple fix and would make everyone happy.
