SMART error

Just tried to install Lion and am now getting a message telling me .This disk has S.M.A.R.T errors and has hardware problems that cannot be repaired. Does this really mean that the harddrive is shot and needs to be replaced?

Is Lion responsible for this? The computer has been working perfectly until I attempted this install.

I used bootcamp to run Windows 7. I used the maximum space available but very soon got error messages saying that the disk was full and was in danger of failing. So, I removed the partition (it was supposed to be a long procedure but happened very quickly). Since then I have had no error messages until I attempted to install Lion. I have checked the disk with Disk Utility and Smart Reporter and they both verify that the disk is close to failure. Maybe it is related....

I am having the same issue. I have a 27in iMac and tried downloading the new software today. It said "This disk has S.M.A.R.T. errors. This disk has a hardware problem that can't be repaired...." I got my iMac last year and didn't get the Apple Care..thinking I would have no issues. I had no problems until today when I ran into this...What's going on????

So its not just me that encountered this problem after attempting to install Lion.

I went through a disk repair with apple support but it didn't work and they advised that I have no option but to take it to an Apple store for repair or replacement.

But if people other than me have had this experience does that mean that we all just happen to have failing hard drives at the same time or is Lion responsible for this problem .
