Q: Lion broke screen sharing, VNC?

Lion is installed fine and dandy on my iMac.  However, I cannot use Screen Sharing from my laptop (not upgraded... Yet) nor can I use VNC from my PC or iPad to connect to the iMac.  Everything gets a "could not connect" error with no useful information.

I have Remote Administration turned on with thiMac and could use VNC just before the Lion upgrade went in.

Any pointers/suggestions?

Well I was still having the problem of a freeze when logging in to an 'already logged on' user with VNC.  My earlier post reccomended a VNC client that had better support for Mac OSX Authentication.  However, that client is no longer free.

I found a fix that seems to work reliably as long as you are content with logging on to the user who is already logged on to the console:

    http://krypted.com/tag/vnc/

In short, from the command line you issue the following command:

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.RemoteManagement VNCAlwaysStartOnConsole -bool true

Enter your admin password and the next time you log in with VNC it will skip the login window (and associated freeze).

Hope this helps some others who are still facing this bug.

I was able to get VNC working again by enabling Remote Management under Sharing in the System Settings. Now I can get into my Mac running Lion again, even if I don't already control the console, and without having to switch to other VNC clients.

I have tried everything it is told on this topic, but nothing solved the problem completely. It always comes back.

The only thing that fixed (sic)  the issue was to upgrade the OS to Mountain Lion. Not that it is really good right now, but at least it is better than in Lion and I need to restart the server lesser than before.

If Apple one day allows to use XCode in Windows or Linux I will certainly never come back to Mac OS X Server. Basic issues like "VNC connection"  never happens on Linux and it is treated more seriously on Windows (at least I never had to upgrade my Windows Server to fix remote client - which can handle multiple sessions without "magic on configuration").

I am using this server only to provide XCode access to developers. All other services were already migrated to a Linux or Windows server.

    Regards and good luck.

Greg - this worked!  I have passed your gem over to iOSProApps, and others who are using my control surface.

    Thank you!
