Aug 1, 2011 4:38 AM in response to petewawby Georg Portenkirchner,I am having the same problem. Since upgrading to Lion not only is disc space disappearing (15 GB within two days), but Time Machine backups take forever or never finish. Sometimes Time Machine is indexing the backup for hours or it just never gets past a few MB to the full backup.
I am using a Lacie hard drive that is connected by USB to my MacBook 2007.
The console says nothing about anything Time Machine did!
Reading this thread (and thanks to Pondinis posts and his website) I started Disc Ultility to check and repair the the backup drive. If this won't help I am thinking about erasing the external drive and let Time Machine start a new.

Aug 1, 2011 5:10 AM in response to Pondiniby EarthBased,Hi, Lion was slow in finding TYPE before I took looked. The name of my computer for SHARE setting is "Mac-OS-X -KUGS-C01" as Lion was hinding the extension for that one so I assume that is the active sparsebundle since I only backup one Mac. The other sparsebundle called "MacBook-01" must be for my old Macbook and I never deleted it. If this is the case, would Time Machine keeping "touching" it when backing up my curent macbook (i.e. the MODIFIED is updated when TM ends) and it is OK to just delete? It is less than half the size of the other one so more evidence it is the old one as I have only been adding data and apps. Thx

Aug 1, 2011 6:11 AM in response to Georg Portenkirchnerby bwclifton,I am having the same issues. Lost roughly 20 GB of free space and Time Machine ran for over 15 hours yesterday without completing a back up. Let me know if you find an answer.

Aug 1, 2011 7:10 AM in response to bwcliftonby Georg Portenkirchner,@bwclifton: Welcome to the club. Installing Lion a second time gave me back all the disc space that got lost, but immediately disc space began to disappear again.
Don't know if the two issues (lost disc space & hour long Time Machine backups) are somehow related.
I already varified the hard disc of my Macbook and on time Disc Utility is varifiying and repairing the backup disc. Still some hours to go. So will have more information later on.

Yes, on occasion it's unable to put the "sparsebundle" extension on it.
The other sparsebundle called "MacBook-01" must be for my old Macbook and I never deleted it. If this is the case, would Time Machine keeping "touching" it when backing up my curent macbook (i.e. the MODIFIED is updated when TM ends) and it is OK to just delete?
It's probably touching it to be sure it's not the one for your current system. TM does not use the name of the sparsebundle, but a file inside it to know which Mac it belongs to. That's so, if you change your Computer name, or have two with the same name, it still knows which is which. And if you change your computer name, it will change the sparsebundle name automatically on the next backup.
But yes, if you don't need those backups any more, you can delete it. See #Q5 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.

Aug 1, 2011 7:18 AM in response to Georg Portenkirchnerby bwclifton,Exact same situation for me. I did a complete reinstall of Lion on Friday. Got back the hard drive space, but it went away almost immediately when I plugged in my external hard drive for backup.
I'm making my 4th trip to an Apple store since Friday to see if they can fix the hard drive space mysteriously disappearing, as well as get Time Machine working properly.
If they give me an answer, I will pass it along.

Time Machine has a new feature (see below) Not sure if it applies to your situation.
Try backing up to TM again, but leave the TM Volume connected for a few hours
If you have a portable computer, in addition to saving backups on your backup disk, Time Machine saves hourly snapshots of files and stores the snapshots on your computer’s internal drive. If your backup disk isn’t connected, Time Machine continues saving snapshots on your internal drive, and then resumes backing up to your backup disk when you reconnect it.
Tony
Edit: Just read Pondini's write-up on "Local Snapshots". Excellent, take a look at his item #30

Aug 1, 2011 10:32 AM in response to bwcliftonby Georg Portenkirchner,@bwclifton That would be nice. Hope they will find the reason for this strange behaviour.
Here Disc Utility is still verifiying and repairing my backup disc. Doing it for hours now and still 7 hours to go, but found already several errors.
-
Aug 1, 2011 10:36 AM in response to Tony T1by Georg Portenkirchner,@ Tony Thanks. I know about the local Snapshot features and guess bwclifton also does.
But hard to believe that this feature would occupy more than 20 GB within a couple of days.
Disabled the Snapshot feature with the terminal last week, but disc space still vanished.

Aug 2, 2011 8:09 AM in response to petewawby Georg Portenkirchner,Verifying and repairing my external backup drive took more than 16 hours. There were several errors but in the end Disc Utility told me that there aren't any problems anymore.
First Time Machine backup took about 40 minutes but was nearly 1 GB. Second backup was very fast, as was the third one. Fourth backup got stuck again at 140 KB and finished when I was away. So far now Time Machine backups last a bit longer than under Snow Leopard, but they are still reasonable. Not taking several hours and they all finished so far.
Thank you Pondini for your posts and your website!

Just for future reference, there's no point to running the verify; if a problem is found, that all has to be done again by the repair. Just run repair.
Anyhowk glad it's sorted out!

Aug 2, 2011 10:07 AM in response to Pondiniby EarthBased,Disabled TM, deleted Spotlight Index after stopping Spotlight and emptied Trash of it, started Spotlight, Enabled TM, Started a backup. I also deleted the sparsebunble of my old macbook per other post. Looks like I still have some problems; what is AFP RPC? I assume that is MDS trying to talk to BACKUPD? Anyway here is the log and let me know if I should just wipe TM clean and started over. Thx

Disabled TM, deleted Spotlight Index after stopping Spotlight and emptied Trash of it
What did you delete?

That's the problem; there are several similar messages.
let me know if I should just wipe TM clean and started over
That's the easiest thing to do. See #Q5 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.
The other is to delete the index, so it will be completely rebuilt on the next backup:
First, download the Tinker Tool app, per #A3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting. Follow the instructions there to show invisible files.
Via the Finder, locate the sparse bundle, and double-click it to mount the disk image inside it. It will appear on your desktop or Finder sidebar, and is usually named "Time Machine Backups."
Double-click it to open it. Inside it you'll find a .Spotlight-V100 folder. Delete it (you'll have to enter your Admin password), and empty the trash. Do not touch anything else.
Eject the disk image, and run a backup. The first one will take quite a while, as it must be indexed, but thereafter, backups should run normally.
