How do I tell Lion to disable the LCD screen even when the lid is open?

Hello,

A known issue with MacBook Pro's is that the WiFi reception is poor when running in clamshell mode. A workaround for this issue when using an external monitor only has been to close the MacBook, wake it with a USB device and monitor attached, and then re-open the lid.

Unfortunately, this doesn't work in OS X Lion. That's because as soon as you open the lid, Lion re-detects all the displays and re-enables the LCD monitor. I'm sure in some circumstance, that's very helpful. But not in mine.

Does anybody know of a way to keep Lion from re-enabling the monitor whenever the lid is opened?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7)

Here's the short version. Make sure that you have removed the nvram boot-args hack, this solution won't work if the hack is active.

1. Close the lid of your MBP.

2. Run a full screen game or Scarlac's app, see above.

3. While the app is running, open the lid of your MBP.

4. Keep the lid open, close the full screen game or app.

There you go. If that doesn't work read this post for more details: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3190417?answerId=20839259022#20839259022

Hi Steve

The program is pretty simple. Make sure you close the lid (and wait for the mac to register it) before you launch the app. Launch the app, wait 3 seconds, open the lid, wait 3-5 seconds and then press escape/click.

That's about it. The app tries to exploit a bug that may eventually be fixed. I have a theory that it will work for laptops with a dedicated graphics card, because it may be related to how the cards turn off and on, but I can't really know for sure (I dont have access to that many machines to test it out).

Let me know if it works for you or not. Then I can tailor the app to tell the user if the fix will work for them and redirect them to the nvram-fix (though I had some bad sideeffects with that one).

I can confirm here, I recently did a Mountain Lion clean install and updated to 10.8.3, then tried sarlac's ClamshellOpen app and it did not work anymore, the internal screen is re-activated as soon as I open the lid...

I also tried SwitchResX, which works great even in 10.8.3 ... it looks like a great tool but I won't use 80% of its other features, so 15€ is a bit of a high price for my usage ...

I'm not against paying for developper's work, so I contacted the developper and asked him if he can create a "lite" version at a cheaper price with less features (but at least the screen disabling one 🙂 )

I'll keep you updated if he answers.

For information, SwitchResX's developper (Stéphane Madrau) did answer to me very quickly.

As I thought, he's not committed full time to this program and is alone developping it, so with the time he has, he's more likely to focus on adding new features than removing some for a "lite" version 🙂

You can try the program for 10 days to see if other features it offers are worth it for you. As for swiching on and off any of your screens it's quite easy to use and works perfectly, you can even configure which screen is on/off for each application which can be useful too.
