Wifi Constantly Dropping in Lion

Since upgrading my Fall 2009 21.5" iMac to Lion my wifi connection will drop out about every minute and the I have to turn Wifi off and then back on to get it to connect again. Is there any known way to fix this? Any suggestions will be appreciated

Thanks

i just get a new 4. gen TCm and now i di have wifi drops to in ipad and iphones.

1 hours all works fine, now in 15sec cycles on/dropped/on ... i change the TC to get a new one, but its the same.

old TC 1. gen works fine with wifi over 3 years now this !!

i readed now all this post about and there are a lot of user having this pain. and apple ? does nothing?

bad story.

in some post is a recommendation to get back to firmware 7.4.2, but apple does not give this firmware to get downloadable ...

some post addresses the tc name without space ... not solveing.

now i do try to get wothout WPA2, but there is no choice for WPA only, its mixed WPA/WPA2 or WPA ^^

only possability to use WEP security ... what a shame for apple. i will try now after 2 days with restarts and reconfigs ... apple plug and use ? no more in this time, its no more betther than low cost products. all my neighbors without apple has wifi working fine 😟

reseted and reconfigured with WEP security .. still drop wifi in cylces 😟

one thing -> 1. configuration works 1 hour ok, than the first drop and furture in short cycles ... there is a standard config option with WPA2 setup -> under options Timeout WPA key and parameter is 1 h!

in error reports are messages in this directions. so apple please solve this problem and do not furture ignore us customser!

Like many other posting and replying herein, I have spend hours and hours putting up either with WiFi constantly dropping or dealing with AppleCare and two trips to the Genius Bar with no resolution. I lugged in my new iMac and the Genius found nothing mechanically/electronicly wrong. I had essentially done all that was recommended by Apple and by those in this discussion group. I was ready to go ballistic on my most recent venture to the Genius Bar and have security carry out a raving maniac unless I was provided with a solution. Luckily, that was not necessary. I just asked for and got a Genius knowledgeable on this wifi matter. He instructed me that when I got back to my iMac, to delete the entire SystemConfiguration folder under Library/Preferences. Previous advice asked that I delete just one of the ".plist" files. The Genius said he'd call me when I was back at home in front of my iMac, and see how that went. I deleted the entire SystemConfiguration folder and restarted as instructed. Wifi has since been maintained flawlessly, like in those far off days when under Snow Leopard, I didn't know what a wifi problem was. Apparently my particular problem was caused when I was using Migration Manager to set up my new iMac. Though I never intended to do so, I inadvertently "migrated" system configuration files from Snow Leopard. In addition to my constant connection, wifi comes back after sleep more quickly. I almost can't believe my wifi is now non-problematic, and have been nervously waiting for a reoccurrence. Over a week now, and my wifi has been unerringly constant. I think it's time to safely remove Airport Utility from my dock (where it never lived under Snow Leopard) and move on.

Try this: While in Finder go to Go (top menu), then Go To Folder, type in (or copy Paste) /Library/Preferences which will open the folder where SystemConfiguration should be (it is filled with nothing but PLIST files).

This is something that I have also tried (deleting all the plist files) but had no luck as the problem persisted shortly thereafter. I have since given up on trying to troubleshoot and bought a 25ft Cat6 cable. No disconnect problems since! lol

Thanks Freducken... I do see a systemconfiguration.plist file but not a folder. I'll try deleting this plist... but like you nothing really works for long after deleting these.

I connected a Cat6 cable to my macbook last night (most likely inspired by one of your earlier posts) ... and the connection is fast and works. Seems that my macbook will be the host for iMac from here on out.

What a mess. I've been fighting with this ever since installing Lion, then downgrading, then installing again.

You'd think that these 116 pages of posts would inspire Apple to help their loyal customers find a fix that works. Ship then test. lol

Same ole S...tuff I deleted the SystemConfiguration folder after finally finding the Finder > Preferences > Sidebar settings for what can be seen by the serfs. Whewww... Thanks for the pointer.

But, still not picking up Verizon MIFI 4510L Dell, Macbook, iPad, iPhone find it fine.

My solution for now is using the macbook as the shared server, and connecting the iMac to macbook with ethernet cable. Very clunky, but it works.

And the internet connection is way faster that it has ever been when the iMac would some times connect to WIFI.

And your sure you dont have any other wifi devices connected to it... maybe a printer? That device only handles up to five devices (which means it might handle five, might handle four, might handle three devices, might handle two devices. Its specificiations does not say will handle exactly five devices at any given time... the specifications say access up to five devices. You should contact the manufacture of your MIFI device and ask for a new instruction manual, or some one to explain what access up to five devices means.

It's posts like these Carlo, that make me wonder how many people are just doing things which they don't really understand, and this is breaking their internet connectivity because of too many devices. I've never been able to get more than about 3 devices to work on my Sprint MiFi device at any one time, reliably.

I don't remember... but a MIFI device costs about a $100 extra a month? Is that correct? It is great if you are on the road and travel a lot (and even then it only handles b/g connections)... but with that $100 a month, you can pay for both home internet service and even telephone service with Verison, Comcast, or dsl with Embarq.

I live in a rural area where my only broadband access is dial up, satellite or Verizon. For $60 a month I get a great service, and I have access when I'm on the road meeting with clients. It's a sad fact that broadband competition is not available to millions of rural homes throughout the US. There is in fact, a digital divide. The children of young families who can not afford broadband access are at a competitive disadvantage.

And my competitive advantage is diminished by an iMac workstation that can not maintain a wifi connection.

Thanks for the ideas on how to fix. I did create a new user, but have yet to get the connection. Will keep on trying.
