Q: Wifi Constantly Dropping in Lion

Since upgrading my Fall 2009 21.5" iMac to Lion my wifi connection will drop out about every minute and the I have to turn Wifi off and then back on to get it to connect again. Is there any known way to fix this? Any suggestions will be appreciated

Thanks

. . . wifi problems extend to my bluetooth too

    Same here.

I tried every solution on these forums. I managed to it from requiring a network log-in every time it logged in for woke from sleep (including when switchign users . . .), to dropping at random times, to dropping randomly but only occasionally.

I'd say I have to turn wifi off and on again two or three times a day at this point, which is usable . . .

But the problem seems to have spread to bluetooth. Occasionally (after waking from sleep?) it will forget that it has a bluetooth card. I can no longer access any bluetooth devices or even settings. The only way to fix it is to restart the computer.

    YAY LION!

I have been having the problem with Lion ever since upgrading to v.10.7.3 on my MacBook (WiFi connected) and my MacPro (Ethernet connected) for the past 4 months. After losing Internet connection, my only recovery has been to RESTART.

Just an observation ... you may not always experience a drop in the WiFi to your router. A DNS address corruption can also occur where the WiFi (the LAN) is fine (you can see the router and every other device talking to it), but you have no Internet (WAN) connection.

Besides the 2 Apple computers, I have a bunch of other stuff connected to the LAN:

A Win XP desktop and laptop (both hardwired Ethernet),  2 iPhones, an iPad, Apple TV, a Roku Box, a Blue Ray DVD player and 2 IP video cameras. All devices work fine and both Apple computers can "see" all of these devices as well as the router.

So, I've just started a series of tests. It is beginning to look like the CPU sleep mode is the culprit. Many people have reported the problem after waking the computer from sleep. While I have set the monitors to turn-off after a time, I've set the computers to stay on continously. So far, this seems to have solved the problem.

Of course, the real solution is needed in OS 10.7.4 ...or when Apple feels it's necessary to address the issue.

I would really appreciate it if Apple would say a word or two about this... solution or not.  Their silence is quite dis-heartening.    Wi-Fi was not broken in Snow Leopard.  Why did they fix it?

I will be crawling in the attic to run a hard eithernet line to my computer.  That will be a great waste of most of Saturday.

I was ready to purchase a MacBook Air for my wife.  But since it will no doubt be provided with Lion, she will have to keep using her old 2005 iBook running Snow Leopard.   I refuse to have any more computers with Lion in the house until the Wi-Fi issue is fixed for good.  For that matter we will not be upgrading to new iPhones or iOS 5 for the same reason.   Don't get me started about iCloud.

Someone send me a ultra-high priority email when the problem is fixed.   We can have a very big celebration right here.

87 pages of posts since July.... with no solution in sight.

It sems to me as if this is what happens to Apple when SJ isn't around.

Sadly now , we know he'll never return to save the day  like he did in 97

There was a reason he used to get angry - he had high standards and would kick arse until he got things sorted, look how he got miffed at the mobile me debacle , do you think he'd put up with this crap ?

Now apple seem to spend most of their time suing people and trying to sell iphones and ipads. Us macusers ? We've all been forgotten...

I'be bought a new Imac in december and since the first time i've started the mac i had this wifi problem:

Wifi is connected with full range but i don't have an internet conncection all of the sudden.

I've tried all the suggested solutions but nothing worked except changing the radio channel settings to 802.11n+a (i think that's the newest?). But my iphone then couldn't connect anymore and my new wifi printer couldn't so that wasn't the answer.

Now I've bought a airport extreme station because i didn't know what to do anymore.

So now i have 2 networks (fritzbox & airport) at home and my Imac is connected to the new airport network and the rest to the old. Hopefully it stays stable.

Well if it makes you feel better, Apple called me last night on their own initiative.  I was getting dinner ready, and the phone rang.  It's an Apple tech on the line who said he saw my posts about my issues with Wifi and wanted to get more information about my problem.  I answered a few questions about my machine and its settings, and he sent me a script via email which contained some diagnostics.  I ran the program with him on the line, then emailed the results back to him.  He said the engineers were quite aware of this wifi problem, and are looking for volunteers to seed-test 10.7.4 (I declined since my machine is working fine on Ethernet).  He could not say when a fix would be available, but acknowledged that the engineers are working as we speak to get it resolved.

I'm so glad that 10.7.3 didn't fix this. I switched my mom over to a brand new iMac made after Lion came out, and now I have to explain to her how Apple seems fine with not fixing an annoying wifi bug after months.

Bravo Apple! You took someone who switched from a PC because of her phone and ipad, and now you've got her looking sideways at her iMac everyday wondering if connecting to wifi is going to be an issue. That's some quality work right there, especially since wifi is so new and everything and no one uses it yet...

COME ON, APPLE, THIS TOTALLY BLOWS, THIS IS LIKE SOMETHING WINDOZE WOULD DO TO ITS CUSTOMERS, FIX THIS ******* ****!

Is it possible to give more then 1 "like" for the statement above?

    I wish I could.

My nerves are stretched to the limit with this issue.

Not only do I receive at least 5 emails regarding this thread since I upgraded to Lion on the day of its release

and immediately was confronted with this problem, making me search for help in this "support" forum quite early..

This WIFI issue only occurs to be on my iMac (2009) 21,5" 3,06 Ghz. My Macbook Pro (2010) running Lion, iPad and iPhone work flawless!

I stopped looking from solutions posted here because NOTHING solved the problem so far and I am really fed up with the whole thing.

APPLE, why are you so proudly showing off "Mountain Lion" if millions of people are not even able to comment on this thread because their internet connection breaks down every 10sec to 5 minutes under the "amazing OS X Lion"?

Do you really believe all these unsatisfied customers will ever update for your next operating system if the old one never really worked and they threw money out of their windows just to f*** up their shiny computers?

    What is wrong in Cupertino?

What's wrong in Cupertino?, money, lots of it, and arrogance.  I got caught in the Apple phenomenen,  I don't think it will last though.  No one stays on top forever, businesses the world over forget how they got to the top, and then dwindle in popularity.

If it were possible to kick ones self in the *** I would be doing it.....  I've had PC's since they were introduced in the eighties.  My FIRST Mac was purchased just before Christmas this past year, imagine my SURPRISE when I realize that Apple..... That's right APPLE, can build, continue to build, AND SELL these "things" knowing full well there is a problem with the wi fi.  I make sure everyone I know "knows".  Then they spend time and resources on a new OS while leaving us "hanging" with Lion.  I will be moving back to a PC as funds permit.  Mountain Lion maybe will fix the wifi issue but leave us with something else wrong or not working.  NO thanks.  I've learned my lesson.

I know everybody's ****** about the wifi issue, believe me, I am too. It is an infuriating problem and I think it is ridiculous that it hasn't been fixed yet. You should be ******.

But keep in mind two things:

    1) This issue affects a small percentage of users, otherwise there would be a public uproar

    2) This is one OS X release out ot eight. Even Apple is bound to screw up sooner or later.

Look at the history of Windows releases. Windows ME was unspeakably bad, but they fixed it up with Windows XP. Windows Vista was a giant turd, plagued with issues, but they fixed it up with Windows 7. Yes, Lion has more issues then I have ever experienced with an OS X release, and I've been using since 10.2. I think Lion is basically Apple's Vista.

But this probably isn't indicative of future performance. If Mountain Lion is a turd too, then I will definitely consider heading to Windows, but I'm also not going to switch to an inferior OS because of one isolated issue.

"Unfortunately".... I've used Windows, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows 7, have NEVER had a problem that there wasn't a fix or repair for. (something I screwed up maybe lol).  This wifi issue CAN'T be fixed, their support people treat it casually, have you perform reorganization of order of importance ********, their instore techs say nothing is wrong with hardware or software, ISP's change channels on the routers, even replace routers, all to no avail. I've tried to sell this iMac but can't because everyone around me knows of the issue....thanks to me lol.  I believe I have shot myself in the foot !    I guess the big issue is that my belief that Apple was 'awesome" has been shaken,  Love their iPhones, cant touch those, they are awesome for sure. Every time the wifi is dropped the anger grows.... gotta get away from that.
