Q: Wifi Constantly Dropping in Lion

Since upgrading my Fall 2009 21.5" iMac to Lion my wifi connection will drop out about every minute and the I have to turn Wifi off and then back on to get it to connect again. Is there any known way to fix this? Any suggestions will be appreciated

Thanks

Believe me, as someone who has used Macs happily for years, I am just as angry as you are. And I agree, I have never experienced a problem, on Macs or Windows, that has been this persistent.

I just hope it is fluke, not a sign of things to come. Windows 7 is pretty darn good, but I still prefer Macs.

I don't know how 'small' it is...one thread has over 200,000 views, this one, 125,00, another, close to 100,000...seems pretty big to me...

    Wish they'd just FIX IT!

Well, there seems to be a few fixes that sort of work:

1 - Some people are having luck not using bluetooth accessories.

2 - Some people (I'm in this category on Mom's machine) are having some success by not letting the computer sleep at all.

3 - Some people are downgrading the driver.

4 - The lucky people, like me personally, never went to the POS that is Lion.

Steps 1-3 are the typical stupid things I'd expect to do if I had a hackintosh...

I have zero problems and absolutely love it... you should check out some of my past posts..i think the answers are in another thread. I would suggest if you have trouble with your wifi, call your internet provider so they could come out and take a look at the settings of your network and your modem.

Done that... tried changing channel in case of interference from neighbours, no change, swapped out the gateway for a new one, set it all up, same situation.  I think the only real fix is Windows 7. (before windows 8 arrives !)

Carlo, we get it by now that you don't have the problem.  That's fantastic.   But a lot of people do, and the network settings are not the problem.   Looking through the posts a good 75% of the people are running mulitple machines/devices on their networks, and the only ones giving them problems are the ones running Lion.   Lion is the common issue, not people's networks that are fuctioning competely fine with every other device they use.

If you are in southwestern ontario I will wipe this iMac and sell it to you for $ 1,000.00 including the original wireless keyboard, magic mouse and also a wired keyboard with number pad.

i see people trying all sorts of things... .if you dont know... then get help. Contact your Internet service provider. And I am not saying there is not a problem, but if there is it is sporadic. The thing about networks is, if the numbers dont match even by one digit... then you have problems. It does not matter what operating system you have. The best is to go slow, reset everything, and see if that works. If you are not using a router created by Apple, I would suggest you contact that manufacturer. But start with your internet provider, and ask them over the phone to reset your modem. (they don't need to come out for that.) If you would like them to set it up, I am sure they will not mind making a (maybe) free of charge visit. Next if you are not using an Apple Router... contact the manufacture... maybe there is a driver or firmware available.

Jim your  giving up... start from scratch... first thing you do... update your computer and if your using an airport extreme or timecapsule make sure your using the latest firmware, as well as the latest airport utiliity software. next.. change your radio band from b/g to a or n... if that does not work... reset everything unplug your mode, then your router... plug your modem back in, wait 10-15 seconds then plug the router back in. If you are using an airport extreme i dont mind taking a look at your set up through ichat. my username is in my profile.

Carlo, I'm going to be blunt: You clearly don't know, and you're not helping.

It is all right. I have given only positvie and constructive feedback. You could choose to try it or ignore it and sit by the chimney and wait for santa.

Carlo, that is reasonable advice under normal circumstances.  The problem is that there are people running other Macs with Snow Lion, mobile devices, tablets, and PC's on the networks in question and having no issues whatsoever with those devices.   They are taking a brand new Mac with Lion in many cases, and immediately having issues with dropping wifi connections.  Look how many people there are in the 2 major threads relating to this that are having the problems with brand new machines.  But, not having the problems with a single other device.

Yes there are other scenarios going on as well, but the one I mentioned above is the most common one going on here.  When it comes to people who upgraded to Lion and are having the problem though, a ton of them have tried a complete clean install and are still having the issue.... while their network is working fine with all their other devices.

I am not trying to get a jerk, it's just that I don't know how helpful some of the advice is because it seems to downplay the problem.   The problem is there, and it's hard to imagine how it could be anything but a Lion issue when it comes to the scenarios I mentioned above.

I understand... people are running many different type of devices and have many different types of routers and modems... that is why I am suggesting to start at the internet service provider, the modem, then the router, then the computer. Yes there are many scenarios going on. I am not trying to be insensitive, I really am trying to offer advice that i would want some one giving me if i did not know anything about computers or networks. I was helping someone... and they were using the g band (open) and it was as simple as making it from g to n and securing the network. All the wifi devices (telephones, tvs, ipads, ipods, x box, sony play station, etc) where causing this persons network to hic cup. For others it might mean they have to update their firmware on their modems, and routers.

Why no one tries solution which was described in this thread earlier? I downgraded WiFi driver to Snow Leopard's driver and no problem since then!
